Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis blasted the political gamesmanship by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, calling his request for a Justice Department investigation into migrant flights from the Sunshine State “absurd.”
The Florida Republican appeared on Fox Business’s “Varney & Co.” and was asked about a letter from Newsom calling on the DOJ to investigate the transportation of illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard and Sacramento, claiming the state of Florida “deceived migrants into taking flights to these particular locations based on promises of jobs and shelter.”
Applying logic to the wide open southern border that has seen untold millions of foreign nationals enter illegally since Biden took office 2 1/2 years ago, DeSantis said sanctuary jurisdictions should take on the task of caring for the migrants.
“Well, I think it’s just absurd. I mean, California is a sanctuary state, and they actually provide benefits for illegal aliens, and so they’re serving really as a magnet for people to cross our border illegally,” DeSantis said. “Don’t get me wrong. We will shut the border down when I’m president. We’ll stop the invasion. We will build the border wall because I think you need that, and we’ll hold the Mexican drug cartels accountable for what they’ve done to poison tens of thousands of Americans every year.”
“At the same time, if you do have people here illegally and a court says they can stay until there’s some type of court date — I think that’s a bad system, but if it is, the sanctuary jurisdiction should be the one to have to bear that burden,” he continued. “We’re not a sanctuary state in Florida, and I think it’s wrong that states that are doing it right would have to bear a burden, and so they’ve asked for this, they’ve invited it, and they should step up.”
As for the claim that the illegal immigrants were deceived, the Florida governor’s office has said the migrants gave written or verbal consent to be transported before boarding the planes.
Newsom is seen as the likely Democratic alternative should President Biden bow out of the 2024 presidential election, as some suggest the 80-year-old president may, and he has been busy positioning himself for such a possibility so it’s logical that he would target DeSantis — polling consistently shows that DeSantis would fare better against the Democrats than Donald Trump.
