Tough crowd: Christie bombarded with boos for trashing Trump at DC faith conference

Former Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has had a rough week.

First, the presidential hopeful was caught snoozing on a plane by a Trump supporter in a MAGA hat in what is now an unflattering viral photo, and then folks at a Washington, D.C. “Faith & Freedom Coalition” event booed him mercilessly for talking smack about the man who is clearly their favorite contender.

It must be, for the wannabe leader of the once-free world, like Donald Trump packed up his bags and moved out of Mar-a-Lago, right into Christie’s roomy head.

Christie began by telling the Faith & Freedom crowd that Trump “let us down.”

“I’m running because he’s let us down,” Christie said to a crowd at the Faith & Freedom Coalition event on Friday, referencing Trump. “He has let us down because he’s unwilling to take responsibility for any of the mistakes that were made and any of the faults that he has and any of the things he’s done, and that is not leadership everybody. That is a failure of leadership.”

And that’s when he was blasted by the boos.

“You can boo all you want,” Christie said over the top of the Trump supporters. “But here’s the thing. Our faith teaches us that people have to take responsibility for what they do. People have to stand up and take accountability for what they do.”

On Twitter, the former governor put on a brave face.

“If you are afraid of a little booing, then you don’t belong in the White House,” he tweeted. “In fact, you don’t belong in this race. I will never stop telling the truth.”

He probably shouldn’t have bothered.

“You ate the truth,” replied one user.

“Maybe you’ve been booed your entire career because [they] know you’re fake,” speculated another.

“Be prepared for a lot of booing,” advised a third. “You’re not a solution, you’re part of the problem.”

And then there were the memes derived from that darn plane photo.

And the boos weren’t even the worst of it for Christie.

At one point during his speech, some in the crowd erupted with adulation… for Trump.

“After offering me Chief of Staff, now what he does is call me names and belittle me,” Christie said of the GOP frontrunner.

“I will tell you, if all you do is disagree with someone and in return you get that kind of treatment,” he complained, “I’ve joined a great list of Americans like [former Secretary of State] Rex Tillerson and [former Secretary of Defense] Jim Mattis and [former Secretary of Defense] Mark Esper and [former acting White House Chief of Staff] Mick Mulvaney and [former Chief of Staff] John Kelly–”

By this time, the boos were back.

“–and all the rest,” Christie continued, as one person in the crowd shouted, “We love Trump!”

“You can love him all you want,” Christie shot back. “But I will tell you that doing those kinds of things makes our country smaller.”
