The decadence and destruction that defines so many urban areas in America do not garner much attention from the national media, but they exist all the same.
A heartbreaking example was seen over the weekend in South Boston, where four children were discovered living in squalid conditions. But it got even worse, as responders discovered the children in an apartment filled with “alcohol, drugs, sex toys” AND a dead body, according to the Boston Herald.
The children, ranging from ages 5 to 10, were “being hidden” in a back room from first responders sent to the apartment on Saturday after someone called to report that a man had gone into cardiac arrest, the newspaper reported. Six adults were also in the apartment, which is located in a city-run public housing complex.
“This is sickening,” said At-Large City Councilor Michael Flaherty. “I was informed by people at the scene that there were drugs, alcohol, sex toys all around the apartment as well as a dead body on the floor.”
The Herald obtained the report filed by the fire department, which said they found “four children in the back bedroom being hidden by an adult male from first responders.”
“The apartment was in extremely unsanitary conditions. Approximately 6 adults, who appeared to be males, were seen in the apartment,” the report noted. “All of the adult parties were being uncooperative and did not provide helpful information. All adults present denied having children inside the apartment.”
The responders attempted CPR on the person who apparently died from cardiac arrest to no avail.
Flaherty told the Herald the death was “from an apparent overdose” and that “a man wearing a wig claiming to be the father” of the kids was found in a back bedroom.
Council President Ed Flynn denounced the inhumane and horrific” discovery and called for better oversight of the Boston Housing Authority complex.
The politician added, “This underscores the need for oversight into BHA inspections and eviction practices, security efforts in developments and protocols to ensure children are safe in every BHA apartment.”
