Two drag queens read books to young children in front of Independence Hall in a new tourism ad for the City of Philadelphia released Friday.
Visit Philadelphia linked LGBT activism to the American founding in its press release for the ad and highlighted the city’s reputation as LGBT friendly. Drag queens Brittany Lynn and Morgan Wells read a book titled “Giraffes Can’t Dance” to about a dozen children and several parents in front of Independence Hall, the building in which the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed.

“In pursuit of a more perfect, kind and respectful union, Visit Philadelphia celebrates the LGBTQ+ community in the birthplace of our nation,” the press release read.
“Giraffes Can’t Dance” is a children’s book about a giraffe who is teased for his dance moves but is encouraged to be himself by his friends; it’s about “self-love and acceptance,” according to the press release. One drag queen wore a red dress and a large wig, and the other wore an elaborate costume which included shoulder pads and tentacles about 2 feet tall protruding from his head.
Independence Hall was also the site of early gay rights protests in the 1960s, according to Visit Philadelphia. The press release included a recent market research study which found that most tourists perceived the city to be LGBT friendly.
The Visit Philadelphia website also advertises the Pride Month, drag brunches and “history gayborhood markers” throughout the city.
