‘Be-YOU-Tiful’: Blue city library to host Pride parade for kids

The DC Public Library is hosting a pride parade on Saturday for children ages 0-18, due to many “coming out at younger ages,” according to The Daily Signal.

The “Children’s Pride Parade” is one of a series of events that the library is holding for Pride Month in the nation’s capital, including a Hip Hop lecture about LGBTQ artists and multiple story time sessions with books about pride and the “queer experience.” The library said that the parade is for every family, but specifically children, according to a flyer obtained by The Daily Signal.

“A Pride event, especially for kids, many of whom are coming out at younger ages, ” the event flyer reads, according to the Daily Signal. “A neighborhood parade in which any kid can march and every local school is encouraged to send a delegation.”

The library’s Media Relations Manager George Williams told the Daily Caller News Foundation that there will be an outdoor festival following the parade.

“The parade is for LGBTQ kids and all families, signaling that their community supports them, “Williams said. “Following the parade, an outdoor festival will take place offering popsicles, music, games and crafts. There will be no speakers or performers at either the parade or the festival. While this is the first time that the Library has hosted a community parade, the Library regularly hosts community events.”

An advertising notice, obtained by The Daily Signal, said that one of the themes of the festivities was “Be-YOU-tiful,” and encourages parents and families to accept their children’s “full identity.”

The parade will take place at the Georgetown Palisades and Tenley branches of the library, starting at 11 a.m., according to the flyer. And next week the library is also putting on the “Rainbow Pride Wand Take-Home Kit” event, where children ages 5-12 can make a rainbow wand.
