Leave it to New York City to let a cockroach upstage the annual Met Gala event featuring a who’s who of A-list celebrities.

Eager for its own red carpet moment, apparently, the little fellow made his/her grand appearance before a photographer, who nearly stepped on the uninvited intruder.

“Pests such as cockroaches and mice are far too common in many NYC households, especially in low-income neighborhoods with poorly maintained housing,” NYC Heath notes on its website. “In some neighborhoods, over 50% of households report seeing cockroaches every day and mice within the last 3 months.”

Unfortunately, Variety appears to have confirmed that while roaches are fully expected to be the sole survivors of a nuclear holocaust, this one didn’t survive a night out on the town in the Big Apple:
