Billionaire Twitter owner Elon Musk sounded the alarm that unless control measures in the form of oversight are enacted, artificial intelligence could end democracy as it has existed by exerting influence over future elections, a sobering prediction that he made to Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
The second part of the Tesla/SpaceX CEO’s wide-ranging interview with the intrepid journalist was broadcast on Tuesday’s edition of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and the “Chief Twit” who had already spoken of the perils of AI chillingly warned that unless the U.S. government steps in, a future similar to a dystopian science fiction movie could be coming soon.

“It’s already past the point of what most humans can do,” Musk said. “Most humans cannot write as well as ChatGPT and certainly no human can write that well that fast, to the best of my knowledge. Maybe Shakespeare”
“How can you have a democracy with technology like that?” Carlson asked. “I mean if democracy is you know, government by the people, each person’s vote is equal to every other person’s vote, I mean and people are choosing their votes freely, can you have a democracy with this?”
“Well, that’s why I raised the concern of AI being a significant influence in elections,” Musk responded.
“Even if you say that AI doesn’t have agency, well it’s very likely that people will use the AI as a tool in elections,” he continued. “And then, you know, if the AI’s smart enough, are they using the tool or is the tool using them? So I think things are getting weird, and they’re getting weird fast.”
In the first installment of his interview with Carlson that aired on Monday, the world’s wealthiest man discussed his plans to develop his own AI chatbot “TruthGPT” as a counter to the left-wing bias programmed into ChatGPT and other already established AI chatbots, telling the host that he feared the influence of ideological programmers who could use AI to “lie” and spread false information without any consequences.
“What’s happening is they’re training the AI to lie. It’s bad,” Musk told Carlson.
“AI is more dangerous than, say, mismanaged aircraft design or production maintenance or bad car production,” he explained. “In the sense that it has the potential, however, small one may regard that probability, but it is non-trivial, it has the potential of civilization destruction.”
Musk also spoke of the desire by Google co-founder Larry Page to build a “digital god” using artificial intelligence, a chilling glimpse into the creepy mindset of one of the most influential figures in Big Tech, an industry that is chock full of similar thinkers.

“I mean, the reason Open AI exists at all is that Larry Page and I used to be close friends and I would stay at his house in Palo Alto and I would talk to him late in the night about AI safety and at least my perception was that Larry was not taking AI safety seriously enough…”
“What did he say about it?” Carlson asked.
“He really seemed to be um…wanted sort of a digital superintelligence, basically a digital god, if you will, as soon as possible,” Musk recalled.
