A former West Virginia House of Delegates member who pleaded guilty to a felony for his actions during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot announced a campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday.
Derrick Evans entered a guilty plea in March for felony civil disorder and later received a three-month prison sentence after live-streaming his entrance into the U.S. Capitol once the Rotunda doors were breached on Jan. 6, yelling, “We’re in! Derrick Evans is in the Capitol!” and leaving the building after about ten minutes, according to the Justice Department. Evans said in his campaign announcement on Twitter Thursday that he was “nowhere near the Senate chambers” and “nowhere near the chaos.”
Evans resigned from the West Virginia House of Delegates three days after Jan. 6.
“Two years ago I boarded a passenger bus to Washington, D.C. The goal in mind was to protect our constitutional republic from the 2020 stolen election,” Evans stated. “I walked through an open set of doors. I received a fist bump from a police officer after thanking him for his service.”
Evans called for focusing on election integrity, returning to Trump-era energy policies, and securing U.S. borders “by any means necessary.” He argued potential opponent Republican Rep. Carol Miller had “chosen to represent the values of the globalist uniparty” during her time in Congress, voting “to send billions and billions of dollars to Ukraine.”
“Congresswomen Miller has been honored to represent West Virginia for the past four years and will continue to serve in the Republican House Majority,” her Communications Director Katherine Robbins told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Americans voted for a change and Congresswoman Miller is ready to implement a conservative agenda and bring West Virginia values to Washington D.C. after two years of Democrats’ one-party rule. Her focus is serving her constituents and she is committed to delivering conservative, pragmatic results for West Virginia for many years to come.”
