‘I’m not into the blame game’: RNC chair dodges question about Trump’s impact on midterms

Daily Caller News Foundation

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel dodged a question about whether former President Donald Trump was to blame for the GOP’s underwhelming midterm performance during a Monday Fox Business appearance.

“I don’t like this. I don’t like these parceling out, because he supported Ted Budd, who won, and he supported JD Vance, who won. I think there’s a lot of things,” McDaniel told Fox Business host Stuart Varney. “That’s why I’ve put together an after action report. We’ve got to look at Dobbs. But here’s the one thing that I think people should be talking about. The amount of ticket splitting.”

McDaniel faces a challenge for another term as RNC chair from lawyer Harmeet Dhillon, who cited the Republican Party’s failure to meet expectations of a nationwide “red wave.” Dhillon had previously been announced as one of two people heading the RNC’s post-midterm autopsy, Politico reported.

“I’m not into the blame game right now. I think we’ve got to do an analysis. I think it’s too quick,” McDaniel said. “And I think you can’t parcel out will this endorsement help this one and this? It’s the whole message. It’s what did each candidate do? What was their turnout? But most importantly, why — how do we get independents to support Republicans and how do we get Republicans to support other Republicans?

“And this infighting within our party is never going to help that,” McDaniel continued. “We need Trump voters. We need McCain voters. We need Romney voters and then some if we’re going to beat the Democrats.”

Dhillon repeated her call for change at the top following the poor performance.

“We need an RNC that wins elections and is accountable to its donors and grassroots,” Dhillon told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Republicans haven’t had that for some years, and we believe change is needed to the party to fulfill its promise to our stakeholders.”
