Mariah Carey returns to Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, takes heat for ‘not even pretending’

There was a rare Mariah Carey sighting on Thanksgiving Day, as the popular singer appeared in the 96th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade after a seven-year absence.

But all was not well in the eyes of some viewers, as the “Queen of Christmas, as Carey has anointed herself, appeared to be lip-syncing as she performed her iconic tune “All I Want for Christmas.”

Flanked by dancers, Carey was rather motionless standing under an umbrella in a flowing reddish-pink dress, the ensemble topped off with a sparkling tiara. As she belted out the lyrics, viewers noticed that her vocals were TOO good — like as good as the original 1995 track. What’s more, in the eyes of some, the pop star wasn’t doing a very good job of lip-singing.

There was a cameo appearance by Carey’s twins during the performance, who were seen dancing behind her in Christmas boxes.

The singer would take to Twitter to offer this, “Grateful and so proud of my beautiful kids Roc and Roe, grateful for the lambily and for the precious moments in life.”

What’s clear from Thursday’s performance is that for some, Mariah Carey can do no wrong:

At the same time, singer John Legend offered a 2018 defense to those who lip sync while performing in Thanksgiving Day parades, tweeting: “Fun fact. We all have to lip sync on this parade because the floats don’t have the capacity to handle the sound requirements for a live performance. Hope y’all enjoyed it anyway. Know that if you come to my shows, the vocals are 100% live!”

Then again, there’s this 2014 footage of Mariah Carey’s vocals ONLY performing “All I Want for Christmas” at Rockefeller Center, New York, N.Y.
