Ron DeSantis stumps for Lee Zeldin, says NY can be ‘law and order state’ like FL under GOP

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took the stage Saturday evening at a Long Island rally for New York gubernatorial candidate Rep. Lee Zeldin, a Republican, to let New Yorkers know that they can choose to live as comfortably as Floridians by simply making the right decision at the polling booth next month.

DeSantis specifically said that Zeldin, if elected governor, would have the power to transform New York just as he, the Florida governor, has transformed the Sunshine State. Particularly in regard to crime.

“The No. 1 thing I hear where people get so fed up is they are sick and tired of the crime that you see, particularly in New York City. Florida is a law-and-order state. I am a law-and-order governor. If Lee Zeldin gets into office, New York will become a law-and-order state, and he will be a law-and-order governor,” he said.

“The crime problem has been totally self-inflicted. You cut police budgets, you do things like eliminate cash bail, and you have rogue prosecutors who won’t even enforce laws that they agree with — of course you’re going to have streets that are less safe. Of course you are going to have people that aren’t able to do the basics without fearing for their safety,” the Florida governor continued.

“Stop turning [criminals] loose on the street. They’ll commit a crime and they put them right back out. Stop releasing people early from prison. If you do the crime, you must do the time. We need to focus more on supporting the rights of the victims of crime and not be so concerned with the rights of the criminal. Lee Zeldin will not coddle these people. He will hold them accountable and you will be safer as a result,” he added.

Under incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul, New Yorkers have not been safer, in large part because of her refusal to eliminate the no cash bail policy that was implemented during disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s tenure in office.

If anything, she’s blessed the architects of this disastrous policy.

“Hochul has promoted a major advocate of the state’s controversial bail-reform laws to become one of her top legal advisers. … Joshua Norkin — the former project coordinator for the Decarceration Project at The Legal Aid Society and a prominent player in pushing for bail reform — was promoted to Hochul’s deputy counsel in July,”  the New York Post reported earlier this month.

“Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo had appointed Norkin as assistant counsel for state housing and civil rights in 2019 after he left the Legal Aid Society. Norkin’s promotion by Hochul was immediately ripped by bail-reform critics who blame the liberal law changes for a crime wave gripping New York City,” the Post added.

Hochul has also coddled up to “defund the police” advocates, despite claiming in comments to be an avid supporter of law enforcement.

“Her comments appear at odds with her running on the Working Families Party ballot line, in addition to as a Democrat, this November. Working Families has backed the ‘Defund’ movement in the past,” the Post notes.

“The governor’s defund ties also include the appointment of Brian Benjamin as her lieutenant governor last year alongside Amit Bagga as deputy secretary for intergovernmental affairs. Both Benjamin and Bagga vowed to support defund efforts while running for city offices in 2021,” according to the Post.

As noted in the ad above from Zeldin, the current governor has also refused to fire Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a far-leftist with a history of letting criminals off the hook easy but going after law-abiding citizens like Jose Alba, a bodega worker who was jailed by Bragg after defending himself from a customer who’d assaulted him.

Zeldin plans to do the exact opposite.

“I can’t wait. When Lee Zeldin becomes governor, he’s going to go to Manhattan, and he’s going to remove the district attorney in Manhattan,” DeSantis remarked during his stump speech Saturday.

The Florida governor also touted the candidate’s other plans.

“I’m also excited to see Lee as governor because this states needs better management. You need somebody who knows how to run these days. You know, I look at the comparison between Florida and New York,” he said.

“Obviously, we don’t even need to talk about taxes. You all know the difference in the taxes. We have one of the lowest tax burdens in tihe country. New York has one fo the highest tax burdens in the country,” he added.

Under Zeldin, this would hopefully change.

Concluding his remarks, DeSantis said, “I’d like to see him get in there and unleash your own energy here in the state of New York. So I think this is an important choice for the state of New York. Do you want to continue down the path that you’re on — the path that’s seen you hemorrhage people, wealth, you name it. Or you want to try a different direction?”

Excellent question.
