Robert Draper, writer for New York Times Magazine and author of a new book, alerted a small audience of fragile MSNBC viewers that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) told him more than once that she is in continuous talks with Donald Trump about being his running mate in 2024, if he runs. Draper was on with Ali Velshi on Saturday.
This news should not be used to inform anyone what is actually happening in the world of the former president. After all, since when has the mainstream press, much less MSNBC, reported truthfully about him?
Nevertheless, Velshi, looking cartoonishly investigative in his horn-rimmed specs, Indiana Jones hat, and not-quite-convincingly-rugged leather jacket, asked Draper about his interviews with the GA congresswoman and her overtures to Trump about running with him.
“The first time that Greene told me that was in February of this year, but she in later conversations I had with her, said that those conversations were in fact continuing with Trump.”
“To be fair, Ali,” hedged Draper, “it is very likely that Trump has had this conversation with half a dozen other people, too. Nikki Haley being one, Kari Lake potentially being another one, Kristi Noem also.”
The author then played up an aspect of the media’s characterization of Trump, that he is looking for loyalty above all else.
“What Greene possesses that Trump so craves is loyalty. I mean she has always been there for Trump, she has always had his back. And after his experience with his last running mate, Mike Pence, it is clear that he is going to prize loyalty above all else.”
Taking a few steps back from his opening salvo, Draper said, a little deeper into the conversation, that he “wouldn’t count it out.” That makes the merger sound a lot more speculative. Fanciful, even.
“In any event,” he continued, “I think it is significant that this has been a point of dialogue for them for months now.”
Robert Draper wrote a deeply fictional account of the January 6 protests and the “election deniers” who have supposedly dragged the Republican Party down to new depths. The book is entitled “Weapons of Mass Delusion: When the Republican Party Lost Its Mind.” Draper was on MSNBC to promote it.
The interviewer referred to the contention Draper makes in his book that Kevin McCarthy ties his ambition to be Speaker of the House with “Trump’s denial and the things that Trump was doing around that denial of the 2020 election on January 6th.”
“Among the things that McCarthy told a confidant that I quote from in my book is, if Trump loses and Biden then becomes the president, then the historical headwinds that usually blow against the party in power will work to McCarthy’s favor,” said Draper. “The silver lining is I have a pretty good shot of becoming speaker of the house.”
Velshi lobbed one more question at Draper.
“Yesterday I spoke to a number of Michiganders,” he said, “two of whom identified as Republicans, both of whom are concerned about the cultism of the Republican Party, the adherence to Donald Trump.” He also referred to Draper’s father “who was a conservative but wouldn’t have approved of where the Republican Party is right now.”
Draper responded, “My father, on his literal deathbed, and this was in November 2019, a lifelong Republican, a proud Republican, nonetheless he hoped that Joe Biden would become the Democratic nominee because he believed that Biden was the only Democrat who could defeat Trump and that was what he wanted most of all.”
“I’ve heard this from other Republicans as well. The chagrin that they express that the Republican Party has essentially become whatever Donald Trump wants to be on any given day. And a personality cult, frankly.”
Sounds like Draper’s father was just another tortured and truly unremarkable Never Trumper. In other words, a functional leftist. The son dutifully follows suit in his ritual hatred of the former president.
