A close friend of the late Queen Elizabeth told The Sunday Times she’s “horrified” by the vicious lies that are presented in Season 5 of the Netflix series “The Crown,” which addresses the tumultuous royal news of 1990-1997 and will begin streaming on November 9.
“I’m horrified by what is going on with Netflix and how they are vilifying the Royal Family. It is vicious. It’s as if they’re trying to destroy [them],” said the friend. “It would have destroyed [the Queen].”
That friend, along with many concerned Brits, has called for Netflix to put a disclaimer at the front of every episode: FICTION.
There is growing outrage over the show’s lack of concern for historical truth. The dramatization of Princess Diana’s death and funeral, along with her relationship with boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, is of particular concern to the royal family.
A spokesman for former Prime Minister John Major said the series is “damaging and malicious fiction,” calling it “a barrel-load of nonsense peddled for no other reason than to provide maximum, and entirely false, dramatic impact.”
The series reportedly includes scenes of Prince Charles lobbying the prime minister in 1991 to force his mother to abdicate.
The trailer clearly sets a malevolent tone for the drama.
A Netflix spokesperson said, “Series five is… imagining what could have happened behind closed doors during a significant decade for the Royal Family – one that has already been scrutinized and well-documented by journalists, biographers and historians.”
Reportedly, there will be romantic and intimate scenes of the affair between King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla.
On the topic of Princess Diana’s death, there are awful scenes of downcast William (age 15) and Prince Harry (age 12).
Prince Harry, now the Duke of Sussex told biographer Angela Levin, “My mother had just died and I had to walk a long way behind her coffin, surrounded by thousands of people watching me while millions more did on television. I don’t think any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances. I don’t think it would happen today. No child should lose their mother at such a young age and then have his grief observed by thousands of people.”
Simone Simmons, a close friend of Princess Diana’s, added her voice.
“These are cruel, sadistic and wicked people to recreate these moments. They are the lowest of the low…forcing them to relive the pain, agony, and psychological torment they suffered when their mother died,” she said.
She further said that the show was “disgusting and sick.”
Sadly, the more the Royal Family uses words like these, the more a certain large audience is going to want to watch. It’s like free publicity for Netflix.
The Daily Mail reports that the Royal Family is further distressed that the production team of “The Crown” will be attempting to recreate Diana and Dodi’s final hours in Paris.
More criticism from people close to the Royal Family poured into Netflix on Sunday, including one who called the streaming service “crude, cruel and totally insensitive, particularly in light of the Queen’s recent death.”
“Nothing is sacred to [writer] Peter Morgan. He has made his republican sentiments and his contempt for our late Queen very clear,” said William Shawcross, the official biographer of the Queen Mother.
“This is a vile series which lies to the public and has been incredibly hurtful to the Royal Family from the Queen and our new King down,” he continued, adding, “Unlike any other family, they cannot sue.”
Dame Judi Dench, quoted from the London Times, used more tasty words like “crude sensationalism.” She said it was “cruelly unjust” to the Royal Family.
“No one is a greater believer in artistic freedom than I, but this cannot go unchallenged,” said the esteemed actress.
It sounds a little bit like this has the potential to deal a blow to public relations between the U.S. and Great Britain.
