‘He was excited’: Police officer delivers chilling testimony at alleged Waukesha murderer’s trial

The driver of a vehicle that went through a crowd at Waukesha, Wisconsin’s Christmas parade in November seemed “excited,” a police officer testified Thursday.

Darrell Brooks has been charged with more than 70 counts after allegedly killing six and hurting many others at the parade. Franklin Police Department Assistant Chief Craig Liermann claimed during Brooks’ trial that he was attending the parade with his family while off duty when the vehicle drove into a mass of people.

“Based on the body language that the driver exhibited as he passed me, there was no panic, there was no distress, like he was trying to stop the vehicle,” Liermann said. “In fact he seemed to me like he was excited about what he was doing.”

The driver stuck much of his body out the vehicle’s window and looked behind him, Liermann recalled.

“Based on his body language, my heart kind of sank, because I thought what could be maybe a medical emergency or something like that, to me it clearly felt like it was an intentional act, so that obviously upset me a little bit,” he noted.

Waukesha officer Bryce Butryn, who was on duty during the parade, testified Monday that the driver “appeared to be emotionless and was looking straight ahead” not long before running into people.

Brooks has interrupted trial proceedings many times, with Judge Jennifer Dorow evicting him from the courtroom on multiple occasions last week.
