Retired National Basketball Association star Ben Gordon is facing multiple charges after allegedly punching his 10-year-old son, but an ex-girlfriend has implied that a “nosy Karen” fabricated the allegations.
The incident allegedly occurred at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Monday evening ahead of a flight to Chicago.
Gordon played for the Chicago Bulls as well as the Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Bobcats, and Orlando Magic.
Citing court documents, an America Airlines employee allegedly spotted Gordon delivering blows to the face of his son at about 9 p.m. local time after the youngster dropped a book on the floor in the terminal, the New York Post claims.
Gordon, who reportedly spent the night at the city’s notorious Rikers Island jail before bonding out, “was charged with two counts of assault in the second degree, two counts of assault in the third degree, criminal contempt in the first degree, criminal contempt in the second degree, endangering the welfare of a child, attempted assault in the third degree and resisting arrest at an arraignment Tuesday night in Queens Criminal Court,” the news outlet asserted.
The ex-athlete, 39, reportedly scuffled in the terminal with two Port Authority cops, who required medical attention at a local hospital.
Gordon’s son also received treatment at a local healthcare facility.
Making matters presumably legally worse, Gordon is allegedly subject to an order of protection from that same son, which is still in effect.
Gordon’s ex-girlfriend, who is the mom of another son of the former NBA star, and who wasn’t present at LaGuardia at the time, claims the accusations are unfounded and that father and son were just doing pushups.
“‘Someone was being nosy. It was the kiosk lady. She was just being a Karen. They got security and he was triggered because he was with his son,” businesswoman Ashley Banks, who also described Gordon as “a good man with a good heart,” told the Daily Mail.
‘My son’s father would never put his hands on his children. He lives and breathes air for his three boys. It was the case of the airport Karen triggering another black man. She should be fired. He was just very upset. His son was not hurt, he wasn’t bruised and is with his aunt. The lady was starting with them and called security and he was getting upset. The child is fine.”
Banks also separately said that “The problem is the child was traumatized. The child saw his father being arrested, taken away.”
Gordon won an NCAA basketball championship as a member of the University of Connecticut Huskies in 2004 and went on to win the coveted Sixth Man Award as a rookie with the Bulls the following year.
“Gordon has been arrested several times in the past, including for driving with a forged license, pulling fire alarms in his Los Angeles apartment despite there being no fire and for an alleged assault and robbery. He has admitted to struggling with mental health issues,” Fox News reported.
“Judge Edwin Novillo set bail at $20,000 cash, $50,000 insurance bond or $50,000 partially secured bond at 10%. The Mount Vernon [N.Y.] native — who earned an estimated $84 million during his NBA career — was unable to immediately post bail and will spend the night at Rikers Island. He is expected to post bail and be released by the morning,” the Post reported, as alluded to above, on Wednesday.
All suspects are presumed innocent until or unless they are convicted in a court of law of any alleged crimes.
