GOP candidate calls for criminal probe, opponent illegally obtained sex assault docs, she says

GOP congressional candidate Jennifer-Ruth Green is calling for a criminal investigation into the unauthorized leak of her U.S. Air Force personnel file.

This controversy emerges after liberal Politico published a lengthy article about her campaign that recounted a disturbing incident in a guard tower in which “an Iraqi serviceman sexually assaulted her by grabbing her breast and exposing himself.”

Green, 40, an Air Force Academy graduate, told Politico that “I’m a survivor of sexual trauma in the military, and I am being forced to discuss it publicly for the first time because Congressman [Frank] Mrvan or his supporters obtained — either illegally or by egregious error — military records describing my sexual assault as well as performance reviews, and peddled those records to the media with the intent smear me and my military career.”

Politico claims that the documentation in question was obtained by a public records request, and the publication got hold of them from a person “outside” the Mrvan campaign, but that characterization leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

Green, who is attempting to unseat first-term lawmaker Mrvan, a Democrat, in Indiana’s first congressional district, claims that the 2009 military incident “intentionally derailed” her career, but after an appeal, the matter was settled.

Currently holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indiana Air National Guard, Green implied that it is politics as usual, especially given the timing.

“I believe Congressman Frank Mrvan illegally obtained those documents and was floating them around to press,” Green told Fox News. “That’s what our political team told us, that they were farming it out to several different press outlets to see who could write a very disgusting, ugly smear piece against me with the intent to paint me as a disgraced military officer. Congressman Mrvan and his cronies were definitely responsible for this, and he’s going to try to deny it in every way possible.”

Green also apparently claims that Politico ignored her request to keep that aspect of her career confidential.

Politico noted in the article that the traditionally blue district in the Gary, Ind. area, is one of the most competitive congressional races in 2022, which may explain why the news outlet ran with this story.

As alluded to above, Green released a statement on Saturday announcing that “I have written to the U.S. Attorney, the Air Force Inspector General, and the Department of Defense asking them to launch criminal probes into the release of my confidential personnel file.”

As part of an 11-message Twitter thread on Sunday, Jennifer-Ruth Green wrote that “I’m saddened to have to share publicly one of the most private events of my life, & I’m even more saddened that @RepMrvan, who I applauded for authoring the Military Sexual Trauma bill, would engage in or tolerate this despicable behavior from his campaign and his allies.”
