Failure breeds frustration and there were few more spectacular failures than the pair of impeachments brought by vindictive House Democrats against former President Donald J. Trump.
According to bombshell revelations in a new book, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler feuded with fellow Democrats Rep. Adam Schiff and Speaker Nancy Pelosi over their heavy-handed methods, calling them “unconstitutional” and that they would be used to attack the party.
In “Unchecked: The Untold Story Behind Congress’s Botched Impeachments of Donald Trump,” the latest of a long line of tell-all books about the Trump administration that has become a cottage industry, Politico Playbook co-author Rachael Bade serves up the juicy details of the inner turmoil with the House Democrats, a group that is normally in complete lockstep.
According to a Fox News preview of the book, the New York congressman “took issue with how Schiff, who was tapped by Pelosi to lead impeachment efforts, was prepared to proceed with the impeachment without due process for Trump.”
Nadler confronted the shifty House Intelligence Committee chair and Sunday morning talk show regular, reportedly saying, “It’s unfair, and it’s unprecedented, and it’s unconstitutional,” according to the book.
“I don’t appreciate your tone,” Schiff reportedly responded. “I worry you’re putting us in a box for our investigation,” he whined.
The book claims that Nadler – who was sidelined by Madame Speaker on the impeachment proceedings “made an ‘effort to get back into Pelosi’s good graces’ and that his “aides sucked up to her staff relentlessly” in an attempt to show that his panel was prepared to step in and assist,” Fox News reported.
“She didn’t want the Judiciary panel to interview witnesses at all,” the authors say.”Pelosi simply didn’t trust the panel — which was stacked with liberal crusaders and hotheaded conservatives — to handle the rollout of the complex Ukraine narrative with the careful, compelling treatment it required. She couldn’t afford another Nadler screwup. The Judiciary chairman could focus on the legal business of crafting the articles of impeachment and have academics testify, she allowed. But that was it.”
The lynch mob methods of Pelosi and Schiff rankled Nadler who, according to the book, wanted to give Trump the opportunity to defend himself as other presidents who faced impeachment were allowed to do.
“If we’re going to impeach, we need to show the country that we gave the president ample opportunity to defend himself,” Nadler told his fellow Dems, according to the book.
“Stick close to the Nixon and Clinton cases,” Nadler reportedly said amid criticism from prominent Republicans about the legality of Trump’s impeachment. “You have to arm yourself against these process complaints,” Fox News reported.
Despite efforts by Nadler’s staff to set the guidelines that Trump’s impeachment should look “more like Nixon, Schiff’s staff were vehemently against giving the nation’s 45th president a fair shake, ‘F— Donald Trump,” the authors recalled.
Tensions between the two teams boiled over with Nadler’s squad grumbling that Schiff was “a control freak” who wanted to be the head of the process for as long as he could, the book claims with tempers boiling over after “Shifty” sent Nadler a draft of a resolution laying out the rules ” which ignored his concerns about due process for the president,” Fox News reported.
“These lawless HPSCI b——-!” one Nadler aide said, according to the book, with another claiming”It’s dumb. It’s illegal!”
Amazon describes the upcoming book: “Unchecked weaves a vivid narrative of how House Democrats under the lead of a cautious speaker, Nancy Pelosi, hesitated for months to stand up to Trump—and then pulled punches in their effort to oust him in a misguided effort to protect themselves politically. What they left on the cutting room floor would come back to haunt them, as Republicans seized on their missteps to whip an uneasy GOP rank-and-file into line behind Donald Trump, abandoning their scruples to defend a president who some privately believed had indeed abused his power.”
“Unchecked” hits bookshelves on October 18.
