Fox’s Shannon Bream confronts Lindsey Graham: ‘You’ve handed democrats a box of grenades’

U.S. Sen Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) stands accused of metaphorically blowing up the midterm elections for the GOP.

With that on the table, “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream put the lawmaker in the hot seat for what many consider an inopportune legislative proposal.

As alluded to above, the senator stands accused of possibly tanking the midterms for the GOP by proposing a federal ban on abortion after 15 weeks, subject to exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother, even though the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Dobbs case that the matter was a state issue.

“It’s the timing that’s has everyone scratching their heads,” Bream noted, which could possibly wind up losing the U.S. Senate for the GOP because of the single-issue voters who will come out and support the Dems in the election.

In an interview that is embedded here in two parts, Bream got right to the point by citing a Politico article that quoted a Democrat who said “Graham’s stunt is a godsend and helps us remind voters Republicans want to ban abortion everywhere.”

She also referenced an American Spectator essay that Graham had metaphorically handed the left “a box of grenades.”

“It was hard to find Republican officials and operatives who would defend the proposal,” Politico added.

Later in the discussion, Bream pointed out that the bill has no chance of passing the current Congress, which prompted Graham, who is up for reelection in 2026, to declare he’s in it for the long haul.

Whether the bill about this very sensitive issue was good or bad politics at this time, Graham, who is sometimes RINO, sometimes MAGA, wasn’t backing down.

You can review the politics vs. policy exchange in its entirety and draw your own conclusions. The subtext of Graham’s comments seemed to be that Democrats are the actual extremists on this issue.

“I’m pro-life, even in an election year,” Graham insisted. “And to those who suggest that being pro-life is losing politics, I reject that.”

Graham went on to suggest that he made his proposal because Democrats under Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer are pushing a bill that would allow abortion on demand up to the moment of birth.

“Only in Washington is it extreme to protect the baby at 15 weeks from an excruciating death. Only thing I got going for me is every pro-life group in America and 70 percent of the American people, so I don’t apologize for being pro-life…there will be plenty of pro-choice people who’ll say ‘at 15 weeks, we should ban late-term abortions [with exceptions]’… the people are with me, and the Democratic Party is extreme on border, they’re extreme on crime, and they’re extreme on inflation..”

An unusually animated Graham denied flip-flopping on his previous view that reproductive rights are a state issue.

Among other things, he told Bream that Dobbs does allow for federal regulation and that, in a possible deflection, asserted that his opposition to late-term abortion is longstanding

“I never suggested there’s no place for the unborn in Washington, D.C. If you tell the pro-life movement that we’re out of business in the nation’s capital, that we can’t set some minimal national standard to prevent Chinese abortion policy in Maryland or California, they’ll be a revolt by the pro-life community…

“I will not sit on the sidelines and watch this nation become China when it comes to aborting babies up to the moment of birth. I reject that. I will continue to introduce legislation at the national level setting a minimum standard at 15 weeks…”

“Here’s what I would tell the Republican Party. Be unafraid. Stand up for the baby all over the country…I am confident the American people would accept a national ban on abortion at 15 weeks with exceptions…and reject the Chinese abortion policy being pushed by the Democratic Party. And If we can’t do this for the unborn, what good are we to the unborn…if you don’t stand with the unborn, the pro-life voter is not gonna stand with you,” Graham asserted.

“This is a reasonable position; it puts us in the civilized world vs. China…and Democrats are adopting China and North Korean abortion policy…until last breath, I will be fighting for this cause in the nation’s capital, There’s nothing preventing abortion policy in Washington, D.C., based on constitutional principles or Dobbs,” Graham concluded.
