Thanks to a rising body count, the city of New Orleans has officially replaced the reigning champion, St. Louis, as the murder capital of the United States as the chickens have come home to roost thanks to years of ruinous Democrat policies and the left’s war on cops.
In the first six months of 2022, the Big Easy has soared past its northern counterpart, with 41 homicides per 100,000 residents, an impressive surge of murders which are up 141% since 2019 according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association which, according to the organization’s website, is “a professional organization of police executives representing the largest cities in the United States and Canada.”
“The homicide rate was 11.5 in Chicago, 4.8 in Los Angeles and 2.4 per 100,000 in New York City for the same period,” according to the WSJ. “This year to date, the New Orleans homicide rate is up 141% compared with the same period in 2019, according to the Metropolitan Crime Commission Inc., a nonprofit that works to reduce crime in the city. Shootings are up 100%, carjackings 210% and armed robberies up 25%. The homicide rate is on pace to surpass last year’s rate, which was the worst since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.”

The spike in violent crime has become an epidemic in areas controlled by “woke” Democrats who have demonized their own police forces, coddled criminals and implemented policies that have put the safety of law-abiding citizens in constant danger from vicious thugs who have all but officially been given the keys to their cities with few being more dangerous than New Orleans.
City officials attribute the deadly environment to several factors including a police department that has been overwhelmed, with Loyola University New Orleans criminal justice professor Ronal Serpas, the Big Easy’s former police superintendent from 2010 to 2014, estimating that “the city has about 50% to 60% of the officers it needs to offer adequate protection for residents,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
“We’re in a crisis of crime and a crisis of confidence in this city,” Serpas told the outlet.
“The criminals are more bolder and more brazen,” said New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson. “They do not believe they will face any consequences for their actions.”
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who was re-elected last year, is facing mounting pressure over the city’s explosion in violent crime, addressing growing public anger in a recent interview by saying that “she has been focusing on the problem for a while, and that public anger over crime was pushing officials to focus on the problem,” according to the WSJ.
“A pivot is near and here,” she said, urging “more cooperation from city council members and other officials in rebuilding the police department and reducing crime.”
Some may question Mayor Cantrell’s own priorities such as devoting time and resources to ridiculous racial charades including the unveiling of a sculpture of a gigantic afro hair pick in historic Lafayette Square just in time for the recognition of Juneteenth, the newest national holiday, while bodies were piling up.

Meanwhile, citizens are growing increasingly concerned about the prevalence of violent crime such as a string of carjackings over the recent Labor Day holiday weekend.

“The police department is stretched so thin that the average 911 response time is 2½ hours, according to a recent report by an analytics firm presented to city council. The department says the time is much shorter for very serious emergency calls,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
“The only way you can really get police to come is if you say you are shot and bleeding,” said Nhu Vu who works as a cashier at a supermarket in the New Orleans East neighborhood who told the outlet that “an angry homeless man threw a beer can at her. She called police. An officer showed up the next day, she said of the recent incident.
Ibrahim Rabee, who came to the U.S. from the Palestinian territories and runs a New Orleans auto shop, told the WSJ that “I’m thinking I’m not going to work another year here,” after an employee was recently threatened by a man with a gun for not putting air in his tire. Rabee called 911 after another individual “walked in with a gun and threatened to shoot up the store,” a police officer showed up the following day.
Conway Herzog, an employee for an automotive oil supplier recently dropped by Rabee’s shop to check on orders.
“The only time he carries a gun is when he comes to this part of New Orleans, he said. He’s seen two shootings in the area in broad daylight,” the outlet reported of Herzog who after living in New Orleans for over 50 years, just moved to Mississippi to get away from the crime.
“Man, am I glad to get out of here,” Herzog said. “I don’t see it getting any better.”
