True hero! Florida Chick-fil-A employee tackles attempted carjacker of woman with baby

A Chick-fil-A worker is being hailed as a hero after he thwarted an attempted carjacking at one of the popular fast food chain’s locations in the Florida Panhandle, intervening to rescue a woman with a baby after a man grabbed her keys and got inside of her vehicle.

The action went down on Wednesday at a restaurant in Fort Walton Beach when the man who has been identified as 43-year-old William Branch of DeFuniak Springs approached the woman and her infant, brandishing a stick as a weapon and demanding her keys.

After grabbing the keys from her waistband, Branch then got inside of the vehicle as the victim screamed for help but had his getaway interrupted by Mykel Gordon who flew into action and, despite being punched by the perpetrator, was able to foil the attempt to steal the vehicle.

The dramatic scene was captured on video as Gordon took Branch to the ground where the two scuffled with the Chick-fil-A worker being able to get the car thief into a headlock as other employees rushed to subdue the assailant until police arrived on the scene.

Gordon was identified by reporter Olivia Iverson of Pensacola ABC affiliate WEAR-TV who posted a picture of the heroic employee on Twitter.

“This is the HERO!” Iverson wrote.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has charged Branch with carjacking with a weapon and battery,” according to its Facebook page.

Twitter reacted to Gordon’s heroic intervention.

“In reference to the Fort Walton Beach Chick-fil-A employee who ran to the aid of a woman with a baby who was being carjacked, we want to say a sincere thank you to Ms. Kelner for providing video of a portion of the encounter. (see news release in prior post). It has been provided to our deputies handling the case. A major shout-out to this young man for his courage!” The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook, thanking the woman who was able to get a video of the incident.
