Terrifying mudslides hit the town of Oak Glen in San Bernardino County, California on Monday after heavy rains deluged the area when the back side of Tropical Storm Kay passed through.
Over two inches of rain were reported.
The Oak Glen Steakhouse was engulfed in an oozing river of mud and has closed indefinitely. Shocking video shows frightened residents running for cover as the goo first surged through the parking lot of the business, reminiscent in its blackness and movement of a Hawaii volcano lava flow.
That blackness stems from the source of the avalanche: burn scars on the surrounding mountains left from 2020 wildfires.

“The mud came up and over the roof and when it came over the roof it pushed through,” according to one of the restaurant owners in a report by the Daily Mail. Fortunately, nobody was inside the restaurant at the time.
Thousands of residents in the area received evacuation and shelter-in-place orders on Monday as the horrific event unfolded. Rescuers reportedly searched for a missing person in a mudslide Tuesday. Huge equipment plowed away the heavy sludge in several small communities in the area.
Oak Glen is described on Wikipedia: “One of the most scenic historic spots in Southern California is nestled in the heart of apple country in Oak Glen, California where the summers are cooler and the winters dusted with snow.” The site also reports the town had a population of 638 in the 2010 census.
The hearts of Americans go out to the victims of the tragedy and a GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the employees of the Oak Glen Steakhouse.
“Hello, my name is Brandon Gallegos, I manage and am part of the family that which owns the Oak Glen Steakhouse & Saloon. We are setting up a GoFundMe account to help raise funds to help our 27+ staff members during this sudden tragic time. We don’t want them to feel like this is it for us, we just want to help keep funds coming to them throughout this time. So we are asking for any help you can give us,” the page reads.
“Our hearts were crushed on 9/12/2022 when our amazing and beautiful building/property took a full wrath from mother nature. Thankfully nobody was hurt, but the mudslides came down through the mountains/valley’s and obliterated 70% of our steakhouse/dining room and kitchen with a 7ft wall of mud inside the building as well as the mud engulfed one complete side wall of our building/kitchen and relocated walls and the roof,” the GoFundMe page described.
“Equipment is destroyed, structural problems everywhere, no power, no internet… it’s all ruined. We staff 27+ AMAZING employees who are all now out of the job and we would also like to help them in the meantime, while they try to find new work as well. Our road for rebuilding is going to be a long day by day process, but slow and steady wins the race. Any support you may be able to give would be greatly appreciated,” Gallegos concluded.
Lake Hughes north of Los Angeles was another hard-hit area, with reports of dozens of drivers trapped by flash flooding and mudslides. Over 50 people were rescued.

Kay also caused road closures in Death Valley National Park in California, while California highway 190 was closed near Stovepipe Wells Village, and about 40 vehicles were reportedly blocked by flooding as they attempted to flee.
