Here we go again.
With eight weeks until the November midterm elections, far more Democrats have already requested absentee ballots than have Republicans in the key state of North Carolina. Information gathered from the state’s absentee ballot request report shows that a total of 66,311 absentee ballots have been requested, with Democrats making up the vast majority of that number at 53 percent of the whole, or 35,303 ballots. Republicans have requested just 8,907, or 13 percent.
Those voters with no party affiliation have requested 21,917 ballots, Libertarians have requested 181, and members of the Green Party have requested only three, Fox News Digital reported.
When asked for comment by the outlet, a Republican National Committee official said Democrat candidates like Senate nominee Cheri Beasley can’t win over voters in the state no matter how lopsided the absentee ballot numbers may be.
“Republicans are fired up and ready to elect Ted Budd and Republicans across North Carolina. Cheri Beasley is far too radical for the Tar Heel State and would be a rubber-stamp for Biden’s failed agenda,” the GOP official said.
The Democratic National Committee has yet to respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
An unnamed source familiar with North Carolina elections of the past claimed the disparity in absentee ballot requests was about the same as in the 2018 and 2020 election cycles. The source noted that former President Trump won in the Tar Heel State in 2020 despite the larger number of Democrat absentee ballots because Republicans show up in greater numbers on Election Day.
Many conservative pundits on TV and radio have consistently railed against the notion of massive absentee voting and the ever-lengthening amount of early voting days in some locales. They argue it should not be that hard for able-bodied people to simply vote on Election Day. The COVID pandemic notwithstanding, it hadn’t been a problem in this country for hundreds of years.
A number of contentious races are set to play out in North Carolina come November, including four seats in the House and one in the Senate.
According to Fox News Power Rankings, the races in North Carolina’s 6th and 14th Congressional Districts are rated as “likely Democratic,” the race in the state’s 1st Congressional District is rated as “lean Democratic” and the 13th Congressional District is rated as a “toss-up.”
The race for the seat of retiring Republican Sen. Richard Burr is rated as “lean Republican” with Rep. Ted Budd, the Republican nominee, favored to take his place.
The use and delivery of massive quantities of absentee ballots have been fraught with controversy and error. In just one instance in September 2020, three bins of mail were found in a ditch near the Appleton International Airport in Wisconsin containing absentee ballots for the upcoming election.
A federal judge ordered the U.S. Postal Service to get its act together.
“The right to vote is too vital a value in our democracy to be left in a state of suspense in the minds of voters weeks before a presidential election, raising doubts as to whether their votes will ultimately be counted,” U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero said in his ruling at the time.
“Conflicting, vague, and ambivalent managerial signals could also sow substantial doubt about whether the USPS is up to the task, whether it possesses the institutional will power and commitment to its historical mission, and so to handle the exceptional burden associated with a profoundly critical task in our democratic system, that of collecting and delivering election mail a few weeks from now,” he noted further.
Still, the question remains: Why can’t we all vote on Election Day? Some suggest making it a national holiday and maybe that’s what needs to happen. It would certainly eliminate a great many excuses.
