Reacting to a “Meet the Press” interview with Kamala Harris, former U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill claims that being vice president, which is often largely ceremonial, is a “hard job.”
Suggesting that history repeats itself, she also revealed that Joe Biden was the subject of ridicule from other federal lawmakers when he held that position under President Obama.

Despite Harris spewing the usual Democrat talking points, and with a side order of word salad, McCaskill — a Missouri Democrat — concluded that Biden’s running mate “did a terrific job in the interview” with Chuck Todd.
During the echo-chamberish roundtable discussion on the NBC show hosted by Todd, McCaskill went on to say that “I think she has had a rough road to go. I remember distinctly, Chuck, being in the [U.S. Senate] Cloak Room in the first two years of the Biden vice presidency, and how many of my colleagues were looking down their noses at Joe Biden. Mocking him.”
Biden was a longtime senator representing Delaware. Harris was a first-term senator from California before Biden selected her as his 2020 running mate.
Even though being VP is a cushy gig with mostly no heavy lifting, the working conditions are very difficult, McCaskill claimed, playing the gender card: “It’s a hard, hard job – the vice presidency. It’s even harder, I think, if you are a woman in that job, who is seen as an opponent by a lot of the insiders in Washington for the presidency. And so there’s a lot of chattering behind the scenes of trying to diss Kamala Harris. I think this interview shows that maybe all the dissing of Kamala Harris is way premature. I think she did a good job and stood strong.”
As a loyal Democrat and NBC/MSNBC political analyst, McCaskill probably would have praised Harris’ interview performance and otherwise defended her no matter what, even as many aides to the VP, who work directly with her, have jumped ship.
Perhaps the one aspect of McCaskill’s commentary that rings true, however, is the jealousy among rival Democrat officials who see themselves, rather than Harris (or Biden for that matter), as the party’s 2024 presidential nominee. Behind the scenes, in contrast to the way they present themselves to the cameras, a lot of these politicians don’t like each other.
Former Sen. McCaskill was defeated for reelection in 2018 by GOP challenger Josh Hawley. McCaskill likely would have lost in 2012 if Republicans had nominated someone other than gaffe-prone Todd Akin.
During the MTP interview, so-called Border Czar Harris insisted that the southern border is secure, an assertion that even compliant Beltway liberal Todd wasn’t buying.
She also seemed to draw a parallel between the riot on January 6 at the U.S. Capitol and domestic terrorism.

Among other things, Harris also lamented the US. Supreme Court decision that returned abortion regulation to each state, hypocritically condemning judicial activism, which is actually a hallmark of the left.
She also bemoaned the 11 so-called election deniers who are running for the office of secretary of state around the country, even though Democrats have a history of election denying.
