Ohio Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan has suggested that his party should seek new leadership, while Vice President Kamala Harris enthusiastically reaffirmed her support of Joe Biden’s reelection.
Speaking with NBC’s Chuck Todd on the Sunday broadcast of “Meet the Press,” Harris said she would “proudly” join him on the ticket again.
While Harris may be in apparent support of Biden’s 2024 candidacy, others in her party are hedging their bets. Mandela Barnes in Wisconsin, John Fetterman in Pennsylvania, and now Tim Ryan in Ohio.
President Joe Biden’s Friday visit to Ohio’s heavily Republican Licking County was upstaged by Ryan who suggested that Biden shouldn’t run in 2024.
Ryan is in a very tight Senate race with Trump-endorsed JD Vance, to replace retiring GOP Senator Rob Portman.
Near Columbus, Licking County was the site of a groundbreaking ceremony for a semiconductor plant. Biden pointed to the new Intel plant as proof that his economic policies are working.
Asked whether Biden should run, Ryan was cautious but clearly questioning the wisdom of such a move, telling WFMJ’s Youngstown audience, “My hunch is that we need new leadership across the board.”
He didn’t stop there, further daring to speak for both parties.
“Democrats, Republicans, I think it’s time for a generational move,” he said. “The environment politically across the country is poisonous, and people I think want some change.”
The Ohio Democrat was among the first Democrats to denounce the president’s student loan forgiveness plan, saying that the handout would send the “wrong message“. He called instead for broader tax cuts, which would assist the working class and the middle class. Sheesh. Must be an election year.
However, Ryan’s circumspection did not keep him from attending the Intel groundbreaking. The Ohio Democrat was present for the president’s remarks, even though he prefers Biden not to campaign for him.
Asked again about the wisdom of trying to reelect Joe Biden, Ryan said that the decision to run for re-election is up to the president. “The president said from the very beginning he was going to be a bridge to the next generation, which is basically what I was saying,” he equivocated.
Ryan’s opponent, JD Vance noticed and called it out as hypocrisy.
“It takes a real two-faced fraud for someone to tell Ohioans he doesn’t support Biden running for reelection, the literal day before he appears at an event with him,” said the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” who will appear with former President Donald Trump at a Sept 17 MAGA rally in Youngstown, Ohio.
In his Ohio speech, the president insisted that “The future of the chip industry is going to be made in America… The industrial Midwest is back.” His visit there is part of the White House’s midterm strategy to boast about the funding for manufacturing infrastructure that was part of the recent package Democrats pushed through Congress.
On the dusty patch of dirt where Intel is building two microchip factories Friday, President Biden called it a “field of dreams” serving notice that “the industrial Midwest is back.”

As for the election in 2024, some on the right are amused and unafraid at the prospect of the second edition of Biden/Harris.
