$18M distributed to Ohio colleges and ‘oldest historically Black university’ as Biden visits state

To mark the Friday groundbreaking of a new semiconductor manufacturing plant on the outskirts of Columbus, tech giant Intel will announce the company has distributed $17.7 million to Ohio colleges and universities, including the state’s “oldest historically Black university” — just in time for a visit from President Joe Biden, according to a senior White House official.

The multi-million-dollar windfall to Ohio is part of Intel’s $50 million grant program for investment in the Buckeye State’s education and research programs.

“This includes partnering with community colleges across Ohio, the state’s oldest historically Black university, and other institutions to train thousands of workers to work in Ohio’s growing semiconductor industry,” the White House official told The Hill.

Clearly, the distribution of the money must conform to the Biden administration’s mission to make everything about “equity” and race.

Especially when President Biden is traveling to Ohio to brag about the impact of the CHIPS and Science Act, a $52 billion bipartisan bill signed into law by Biden in August to provide grants and other incentives to boost the nation’s domestic semiconductor industry.

The law also gives a lift to the National Science Foundation, “which is matching a separate $50 million pledge from Intel for a national funding initiative for education and workforce programs,” The Hill reports.

Intel initially announced its enormous investments in Ohio back in January, vowing “to build a more balanced supply chain and create a new epicenter for advanced chipmaking that will bolster Intel’s domestic lab-to-fab pipeline and strengthen Ohio’s leadership in research and high tech.”

“Today’s announcement is monumental news for the state of Ohio,” said Gov. Mike DeWine at the time. “Intel’s new facilities will be transformative for our state, creating thousands of good-paying jobs in Ohio manufacturing strategically vital semiconductors, often called ‘chips.’  Advanced manufacturing, research and development, and talent are part of Ohio’s DNA, and we are proud that chips – which power the future – will be made in Ohio, by Ohioans.”

Originally, the factory was meant to break ground in July, but the plans were delayed due to uncertainty over the passage of the CHIPS act.

Now, with shovels hitting the dirt just 59 days before the midterm elections, President Biden is hoping the state that twice voted to elect former President Trump will shift Blue.

And without a doubt, a visit from the President of the United States in tiny Johnstown is an exciting event.

“That’s amazing,” one resident told local WSYX. “We’re just this little town in the Midwest, so it’s very cool that we’re getting a little bit of spotlight.”

But Biden may not receive a warm welcome from all Licking County residents.

As Spectrum News 1 reported in May, many members of the community have expressed concerns that the two planned Intel factories will bring unwanted changes to the towns they love.

“It’s a little intimidating when you think of the bigger chains coming in,” said Tiffany Hollis,  owner of Dashing Diner in Johnstown. “Can we compete with that? I don’t know.”

Months later, some residents are still concerned.

“If I’m being completely honest, I have mixed emotions about it,” another resident told WSYX. “You know, I’m going to be standing next to my grandma’s properties, so that’s still lingering.”
