A TV show that once equated American soldiers with terrorists has admitted former President Donald Trump was “not an illegitimate president.”
During the Hot Topics segment of ABC’s “The View” on Wednesday, cohost Sonny Hostin walked back comments made against Donald Trump’s 2016 clear and decisive victory.
“When Trump became president, I think people were so very shocked,” the morning talk show host said.
“The assumption was, at least mine, I’ll speak for myself, was that Russia must have been involved because we knew that from the Mueller report that Russia had some involvement. Russia thought that it could have benefitted from a Trump presidency, which it did by the way. But I remember calling him an illegitimate president, and that was wrong. I should not have said that,” she said.
The 2019 Russian collusion report prepared by former FBI Director Robert Mueller concluded that the 2016 Trump campaign did not collude with Russia to interfere in the presidential election, as many on the left claimed.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg did not appear happy with Hostin’s reversal and immediately interrupted, “But that is how you felt. You had every right to say it.”
Under attack from her cohosts, Hostin tempered her support of Trump.
“However, he remains a twice impeached, disgraced, one-term president,” Hostin said. “All of that is true.”
She returned to her original point, stating again that the Trump campaign did not coordinate with the Russians and “that is where I think I was wrong.”
“You don’t know that. You don’t know that he wasn’t talking to Putin,” interrupted co-host Joy Behar.
Hostin, to her credit, again referenced the Mueller report.
“There was an investigation, and we have to believe that when the FBI and the Department of Justice conducts investigations, we have to believe that,” the former lawyer said. “That is another tenet of our democracy.”
Twitter users were quick to respond.
“@whoopigoldberg Joy Behar and the rest of these election denying conspiracy theorists on @TheView should be called out and publicly shamed. Four years of pushing a conspiracy theory and denying the results of an election. SHAME!” wrote Mike J. Sprinkle
The View has often sparked controversy through extreme left commentary by its hosts.
In 2007, Rosie O’Donnell compared American soldiers to terrorists during a conversation about the Iraq War.
“Let’s be clear, 655,000 Iraqi civilians are dead. Who are the terrorists?” O’Donnell said.
Behar offended Christians on both sides of the aisle in 2018 when she mocked Former Vice President Mike Pence’s faith.
“It’s one thing to talk to Jesus, it’s another thing when Jesus talks to you,” Behar said. “That’s called mental illness, if I’m not correct, hearing voices.”
Media Research Center launched a campaign demanding an apology and ABC received 40,000 phone calls in response. ABC parent company Disney CEO Bob Iger said Behar apologized to Pence directly.
And earlier this year, Whoopi Goldberg was suspended over remarks that trivialized the Holocaust.
