Judge may appoint special master in Trump records case; DNI reviewing national security implication

In the latest developments on the unprecedented raid on former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, a federal judge in Florida has signaled that she will appoint a special master to review documents seized by the FBI while intelligence officials have complied with top Democrats who requested a review of the material to determine whether national security was jeopardized.

On Saturday, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon told the Justice Department to provide a more detailed accounting of items confiscated by the feds, providing “notice” of “preliminary intent to appoint a special master,” a request made by Trump’s lawyers.

“Pursuant to Rule 53(b) (1) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Court’s inherent authority, and without prejudice to the parties’ objections, the Court hereby provides notice of its preliminary intent to appoint a special master in this case,” Judge Cannon wrote in a court filing.

Trump welcomed the news.

“Federal Judge in Florida just took over the Presidential Records Act case, including the unprecedented, unnecessary, and unannounced FBI/DOJ Raid (Break-In!) of my home, Mar-a-Lago. This assault was done for political purposes just prior to the Midterm Elections (and 2024, of course!). It is a disgrace to our now Third World Nation!” The former and possible future president wrote on his Truth Social platform.

On Friday, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told top Rep. Adam Schiff of California and Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York that her office is conducting a review to determine if the “disclosure of the relevant documents” were a threat to national security, the two top House Democrats had requested that a damage assessment be done relating to the documents, suggesting that their mortal enemy Trump put the nation’s security at “grave risk” in a letter dated August 13th.

“The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) are working together to facilitate a classification review of relevant materials, including those recovered during the search,” Haines wrote in a Friday letter to the House Intelligence Committee and House Oversight Committee chairs.

Congressman Schiff, who has spent years trying to nail Trump on Russiagate, Ukraine and now Mar-a-Lago has been lobbying hard for the review.

“The redacted affidavit makes clear Trump kept highly-classified national defense information at a public resort,” he wrote on Twitter after the release of the heavily redacted search warrant affidavit. “If that wasn’t alarming enough, some wasn’t even in folders, merely intermixed with news clips and other debris.”

“The IC must do an immediate damage assessment,” he demanded.

Maloney – who was just thumped in her Democrat primary – issued a statement after the release of the affidavit.

“Today’s unsealed redacted affidavit leaves no doubt: former President Trump’s reckless handling of our country’s most sensitive documents placed our national security at grave risk and blatantly violated the Presidential Records Act,” Maloney wrote. “Today’s alarming revelations make my request to the Director of National Intelligence to provide a damage assessment regarding these highly classified materials even more urgent.”

Judge Cannon has scheduled a Thursday hearing on the special master to further discuss the matter although even if there is one appointed, it won’t stop Democrats and the weaponized federal government from reviewing the documents in order to build a case against Trump that will land him in a Washington D.C. courtroom.
