DeSantis responds to Charlie Crist’s shocking ‘I don’t want your vote’ basket of deplorables-like rant

The Florida gubernatorial matchup is now set with Democrat Rep. Charlie Crist easily winning Tuesday’s primary and heading for a matchup with hugely popular Governor Ron DeSantis who is expected to be heavily favored and Crist did himself no favors by immediately announcing that he wouldn’t even bother attempting to appeal to anyone outside of his party’s radical left base.

Crist, who himself was once the Sunshine State’s Republican governor before becoming smitten with Barack Obama and jumping parties, easily dispatched the loathsome Nikki Fried, the current Florida agriculture commissioner and a former weed lobbyist, clubbing her by 25 points in the primary. But instead of trying to appeal to DeSantis supporters, the one-time Republican had his very own “basket of deplorables” moment.

“Those who support the governor should stay with him and vote for him. I don’t want your vote. If you have that hate in your heart — keep it. I want the vote of the people of Florida who care about our state. Good Democrats, good independents, good Republicans — unify with this ticket,” Crist said while speaking to reporters on Wednesday.

Governor DeSantis appeared on Fox News on Wednesday night where he was asked by Tucker Carlson about Crist’s insulting of millions of Florida voters.

“He doesn’t want your vote. You’re morally beneath him. I’ve never seen a politician say that,” Carlson said after teeing up a clip of his Democrat opponent’s remarks.

DeSantis responded, “This is his fifth decade running for office, he’s a chameleon, typical career politician, but you know Tucker, people support me because I kept the state open and protected their jobs. Charlie Crist wanted it locked down so that’s not hate in their heart, they’re just appreciative that they had a governor who was standing up for them.”

“Parents around the state support me because we made sure schools were open and we’re working to make sure that they get education, not indoctrination,” he added. “That’s not hate in their heart, they’re just appreciative they have a governor that’s fighting for them.”

Carlson replied, “It’s kind of weird to see Charlie Crist look down his nose at voters. Is there anyone in the state who is more morally suspect than Charlie Crist who’s registered to vote that you’re aware of?”

“I don’t think you can. He’s not one to be casting stones,” laughed DeSantis. “What he says, he claims, that he wants to unify Florida. He says he wants a Florida for all and then you condemn a majority of people in the state of Florida. Give me a break, and the thing about what I’ve done is — you know, we’ve done issues that people across the spectrum have been able to agree with and that’s really what it’s all about. It’s not hating the other side, but having policies that a majority can agree with.”

Crist’s remarks echoed those of failed Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton who months before her historic upset loss to billionaire businessman and political outsider Donald J. Trump heaped scorn upon his supporters whom she called a “basket of deplorables” in dismissive remarks that backfired badly, galvanizing pro-America conservatives and serving as a rallying cry that would come back to haunt her.

Like with Clinton, it could soon boomerang as well on Crist who aspires to return to the governor’s mansion under the flag of his extremist party because no sooner had the words left his mouth that they were turned into a damning social media ad by the DeSantis War Room.

Cutting from Clinton’s ill-fated denunciation of half the electorate to Crist’s angry rejection of DeSantis voters, the ad reads “Democrats never learn,” which history has shown time and again, is a common trait of ideologues.

Drawing immediate comparisons to Clinton, who is one of the most widely disliked and polarizing Democrat candidates in history, isn’t exactly getting his campaign off to a rip-roaring start for a man who is already a huge underdog and needs all the help that he can get.

Twitter users expressed their opinions on Crist’s suggestion that millions of Floridians are hateful bigots so unworthy of him that he wouldn’t even accept their votes.

Only a few short days ago, Crist positioned himself as a uniter, much like Joe Biden who said the same thing on the campaign trail. But Americans who didn’t vote for him soon discovered that the career politician spoke with a forked tongue and, let’s face, it, Crist has firmly established himself as a flip-flopper and opportunist.

As could be expected, Crist got the hero’s treatment from the partisan hacks at CNN where he appeared on Wednesday’s edition of “New Day” to talk smack and boast that he’ll be the man who takes down DeSantis before he launches a 2024 White House run.

“It is the Democrats’ last chance to stop him, and it’s going to be a lot cheaper to do it in Florida than it would be to do it in 50 states, so let’s do it now let’s stop this thing,” he said.

Crist also denied that DeSantis is very popular, a comment that is consistent with the Democrats changing the definition of what a recession is and insisting that men can get pregnant, and it may be music to the ears of the anti-DeSantis resistance but he likely won’t be as inspirational of a figure when he gets steamrolled in November.
