Republicans up the pressure on DOJ after Mar-a-Lago raid; want proof it wasn’t a ‘fishing expedition’

Republican lawmakers are stepping up their pressure on the Biden regime after the shocking raid on former President Donald J. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, an unprecedented move against an opposition leader that has sent shockwaves through the political system.

Despite the search warrant’s public release on Friday, a day after Attorney General Merrick Garland took responsibility for the raid, the vague and overly broad language in the document was more in line with a fishing expedition than anything specific, leading to calls from some to reveal the actual affidavit with details that would have swayed a federal judge to authorize the search.

“I think releasing the affidavit would help, at least that would confirm that there was justification for this raid,” said GOP Senator Mike Rounds of Indiana during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

“For months and months, they tried to get cooperation, didn’t they take every step that they could have taken?” Andrea Mitchell asked.

“I think the last part of your question is probably very important. I think it would be good for the Justice Department to release some of the information about the extraordinary steps or the steps they did take to try to cooperate with the former president,” Rounds responded, adding that it does appear to be the case that a president can declassify information as Trump has contended.

“And I think that’ll be part of the discussion, moving forward. In the meantime, yeah, there’s concern out there. And believe me, Republicans out there are questioning, ‘Why in the world are you going after a former president right now, but you didn’t go after other individuals who clearly had classified documents or information that was sensitive and you did not do that in the previous administrations?’ Rounds said.

“The Justice Department should ‘show that this was not just a fishing expedition, that they had due cause to go in and to do this, that they did exhaust all other means,’ he said. ‘And if they can’t do that, then we’ve got a serious problem on our hands.”

Also on Sunday, Senators Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) of the Senate Intelligence Committee sent a private letter to Garland and Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines regarding the FBI’s storming of Mar-a-Lago, according to Axios which cited information provided by Rubio’s office.

Ohio GOP Rep. Mike Turner appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” where he called for transparency.

Speaking of a “number of concerns” about the raid, Turner said, “One is obviously whether or not the raid itself was justified, we have this list from the FBI but what we don’t have conclusive as to if this actually is classified material and whether or not it rises to the highest level of classified material.”

“On a bipartisan basis, Congress is saying ‘show us the goods.’ We want to know one, what did the Department of Justice and the FBI tell the judge that they were gonna find, and what did they find”” Turner asked. “There’s nothing in those boxes that members of the intelligence community and the committee itself don’t have the ability to see, if it rises to the level of an immediate national security threat which is what it would take to actually raid the president’s home because as you know they had a number of options available to them, including just going to court and asking for the court to enforce the subpoena that they had.”

“Now clearly, no one is above the law,” he added. “Donald Trump is not above the law and Attorney General Garland is not above the law either, and Congress has the powers of oversight, he needs to comply, we’ve seen material like this before, we’ve seen materials that have been submitted to courts for warrants, this is not unprecedented, his actions are unprecedented in history and he has a lot of questions to answer.”
