Would-be gun grabber Beto O’Rourke is receiving a lot of Twitter applause for dropping an F-bomb during a campaign event, but even CNN admits that the Democrat politician misfired.
Warning for language.
The failed 2018 U.S. Senate and 2020 presidential candidate who is now running for governor of the Lone Star State was speaking to a room of supporters about the evils of the AR-15 in the context of the horrific massacre at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
When someone in the audience on Wednesday allegedly laughed during his rant, O’Rourke responded, “It may be funny to you, motherf—er, but it’s not funny to me.” His vulgar response prompted real-world applause and cheers from those in attendance at the Mineral Wells, Texas town hall.
The footage has received millions of views.
Reacting to the incident in the video clip embedded above, CNN commentator Errol Louis said that “passionate” O’Rourke uses that language “when he is in the moment.”
He added, however, that “Is it going to help him politically? I can’t see how.”
Throwing Beto a bone, Never Trumper John Avlon, who was on the same panel with Louis, apologetically chimed in to claim that “The F-bomb becomes a signifier of authenticity.”
Separately on the subject of alleged authenticity, O’Rourke’s Twitter feed contains various testimonials from avowed lifelong Republicans who are supposedly switching to the blue team.
At least in the clip that is being widely shared, O’Rourke did not mention the failure of heavily armed police to pro-actively neutralize the gunman and, instead, loitered in the hallway for more than an hour during the May 24 massacre in Uvalde that took the lives of 19 kids and two teachers.
O’Rourke is no stranger to exploiting a tragedy for social media likes and shallow viral moments, particularly as it relates to gun control.
In the immediate aftermath of the Uvalde tragedy, O’Rourke disrupted GOP Gov. Greg Abbott’s press conference. As BPR noted at the time, Beto turned “what was a somber setting into a disgusting political circus that ended with his ejection from the scene.”

According to a Real Clear Politics aggregate of four polls, incumbent Abbott currently holds a six-point lead over O’Rourke.
During the Mineral Wells monologue, O’Rourke lamented that the Uvalde shooter purchased rifles at age 18 by following the laws on the books and that these weapons were “originally designed for use on the battlefields of Vietnam.”
In a form of performance art, O’Rourke dropped to one knee almost as if he was aiming a rifle.
Positioning the candidate as an advocate of responsible gun ownership, Beto’s website indicates that “And while it might not be the easy or politically safe thing to say, I don’t believe any civilian should own an AR-15 or AK-47. ”
During a presidential primary debate, when O’Rourke alluded to the tragic, August 2019 mass shooting in his El Paso, Texas, hometown, he emotionally declared that “hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not going to allow it to be used against fellow Americans anymore.”
