The week is off to a very bad start for former President Donald J. Trump whose Mar-a-Lago home was raided by President Joe Biden’s FBI on Monday and on Tuesday, a Washington D.C. court greenlighted Democrats who have been seeking his tax returns, the likely basis for more congressional investigations if not another select committee.
The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 3-0 in favor of the House Ways and Means Committee which has been seeking to pry Trump’s returns loose from the Treasury Department, the latest decision by a swamp court to go against the ex-POTUS and his associates.
In writing for the majority, Circuit Judge David Sentelle rejected Trump’s argument that the request was political retaliation, also finding that House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal’s request for the returns fell within the scope of the congressional inquiry.
“While it is possible that Congress may attempt to threaten the sitting President with an invasive request after leaving office, every President takes office knowing that he will be subject to the same laws as all other citizens upon leaving office. This is a feature of our democratic republic, not a bug,” he wrote.

“With great patience, we followed the judicial process, and yet again, our position has been affirmed by the Courts. I’m pleased that this long-anticipated opinion makes clear the law is on our side. When we receive the returns, we will begin our oversight of the IRS’s mandatory presidential audit program,” Chairman Neal wrote in a statement posted to the committee’s website.
Trump’s arch-nemesis Nancy Pelosi spiked the ball over the court’s ruling, again invoking “democracy,” a term that has been hijacked by Democrats to mean anything that furthers their extreme, power-drunk agenda.
“Today’s decision ordering the release of Donald Trump’s tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee is an important victory for the rule of law,” Madame Speaker wrote on Twitter. “Access to the former president’s tax returns is crucial to upholding the public interest, our national security & our Democracy.”

In a second tweet, Pelosi added, “We look forward to the IRS complying with this ruling and delivering the requested documents so that Ways and Means can begin its oversight responsibilities of the mandatory presidential audit program.”

In his response to Pelosi, Rep. Neal insisted that it’s not about the political persecution of Trump.
“I have always taken the authority to make this request very seriously, and I continue to approach it with the utmost care and respect. This is about policy, not politics,” he wrote on Twitter.

New Jersey Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. who is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and has long had an ax to grind with Trump tweeted, “We have been legally seeking donald trump’s tax returns for 1,224 days. Our fight has always been about fairness and accountability. The delays should now end and Congress should now get these documents.”

However, the celebration may be premature as Trump will likely appeal the ruling, all the way up to the Supreme Court if necessary.
