Indiana has become the first state in the nation to approve a near-total ban on abortions after the historic Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and sent the contentious issue back to the American people to decide.
Republican Governor Eric Holcomb announced late Friday night that he had signed a bill that banned the denial of life to the unborn after both houses of the legislature passed it. There will be a few exceptions for rape and incest, and to protect the life and health of the mother.
Holcomb signed Senate Bill 1 within an hour after it passed the Indiana Senate 28-19, making Indiana the first state to have such a ban pass through both chambers since the high court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization after West Virginia lawmakers punted away the opportunity last month.
Other states have already banned abortion through “trigger laws” which were on the books and went into effect after Roe was overturned. The bill passed in the Indiana House by a total of 62-38 earlier in the day with 9 Republicans joining Democrats in opposition.
“Following the overturning of Roe, I stated clearly that I would be willing to support legislation that made progress in protecting life. In my view, SEA 1 accomplishes this goal following its passage in both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly with a solid majority of support,” Holcomb said in a statement.

“These actions followed long days of hearings filled with sobering and personal testimony from citizens and elected representatives on this emotional and complex topic. Ultimately, those voices shaped and informed the final contents of the legislation and its carefully negotiated exceptions to address some of the unthinkable circumstances a woman or unborn child might face,” he added.
“It makes Indiana one of the most pro-life states in the nation,” said Rep. Wendy McNamara, a Republican representing Evansville.
“Ultimately, they’re looking at the opportunity for 99% of abortions in the state of Indiana to be eliminated one way or the other,” she said after the House vote on Friday.
Holcomb and other state Republicans were undeterred by the usual crowd of noisy protesters who gather to throw their temper tantrums whenever they disagree with something, and Friday was no exception as the mob set up shop in the statehouse.

“According to the bill, abortions can only be performed in hospitals or outpatient centers owned by hospitals. This means all abortion clinics would lose their licenses. A doctor who performs an illegal abortion or fails to file necessary reports will also lose their medical license,” Fox News reported.
Holcomb’s signing of the bill puts the Hoosier State on a collision course with the Biden regime which has acted with flagrant disregard to the nation’s highest court, the one institution that has not been in lockstep with the left’s dangerous and destructive agenda.
