Lightfoot touts Chicago’s ‘thriving economy’ in trip to London, Paris as businesses flee crime-ridden city

Far-left Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and an entourage of nearly 20 consisting of city officials and business leaders are spending five days in London and Paris to promote her crime-ridden city as a viable place to do business.

In a lengthy press release about the European excursion, Democrat Lightfoot, who championed lockdowns and vaccine mandates during the pandemic, as well as often pandering on woke issues, claimed that “Chicago’s economy is thriving and our business sector has set records, keeping us competitive with top global financial cities.”

According to the press release, a public-private nonprofit economic development partnership called World Business Chicago is covering travel-related expenses for Lightfoot and her team, which suggests that the taxpayer is on the hook for some of the costs. Business executives in the delegation are accompanying her on their own dime.

“Chicago’s economy is thriving and poised to have the best economic recovery of any big city in the country,” the press release further similarly insisted about the city that Lightfoot described in its current condition, perhaps in a form of delusion, as “world class.”

Lightfoot noted that she is looking forward “to discussing Chicago’s economic strengths.”

Lightfoot is scheduled to meet with European dignitaries such as the equally far-left London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. She is also set to speak at FinTech Week London 2022 “to tout Chicago’s [financial technology] ecosystem.”

“Chicago has not been a hub for growth for several corporations that have announced their departure from the area in recent months,” Fox Business asserted, however. “CNBC ranked Chicago’s economy as the third-least business friendly in the country in 2021.”

High-profile hedge fund Citadel, for example, recently moved its headquarters from the Windy City to Miami because of numerous instances where employees were mugged by armed robbers.

Various small business owners reportedly have similarly suffered under the crime wave and have left the city for the suburbs.

Boeing and Caterpillar reportedly also plan to leave the Chicago area.

A website that tracks the ongoing mayhem, and presents somewhat different stats than the official government tally, claims that year to date, 1,762 persons in Chicago have been shot, 324 of whom died from their wounds. Overall, the city has seen 355 murders so far.

Former Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass, an expert on everything Chicago, previously backed Lightfoot. In a July 8 blog post, the longtime journalist is calling for Lightfoot, who returns home on Sunday, to step down, and instead extend her EU visit indefinitely:

Lightfoot has been a disaster for Chicago.

She should go, now, the sooner the better, if only to give the city she says she loves a chance. Because every day that she remains in office, she hurts Chicago, its people and the city’s future. She should go. Now.

There is no competent urgency vibe coming from Lightfoot’s City Hall, just a sense of the bureaucratic paralysis. Crime is up 36 percent over last year. She has broken and demoralized the police force. Cops don’t want to get out of their cars. And who’d blame them after all she’s done to them? Every day in this, her “Summer of Joy,” the people are filled with dread. They’re shot and killed or just shot, and robbed, intimidated. Who goes downtown to spend money? Tourists? No. The middle class? No. And the wealthy are in Montana, or Wyoming or Florida. Anywhere but Chicago….

Chicago needs competent management. Without competent management the city is doomed. And Lightfoot, as she’s proven repeatedly, is not a competent manager…

Despite the chaos in the city that appears to have no sign of abating, Mayor Lightfoot has announced that she is running for reelection in 2023.
