The White House was once again forced into damage control mode to clean up over a controversial tweet by President Joe Biden after billionaire Jeff Bezos accused him of not being honest with the American people about who’s to blame for record gas prices.
Americans continue to be hammered by the price at the pump along with the worst inflation in four decades over the Fourth of July weekend, with the cost of holiday cookouts up substantially over last year and voters in a surly mood with a recent poll showing a stunning 85 percent believing that America is heading in the wrong direction under Biden.
On Saturday, an ill-advised tweet was sent out by Biden in which the POTUS attacked gas station operators -including small business owners – and demanded that they bring the price down.
Bezos, who is one of the wealthiest men on the planet and who understands a thing or two about basic economics, scolded Biden with an eye-popping response to his latest authoritarian demands.
“Ouch. Inflation is far too important a problem for the White House to keep making statements like this. It’s either straight ahead misdirection or a deep misunderstanding of basic market dynamics,” tweeted the Amazon founder.

National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby rejected Bezos’ criticism, insisting that Biden has always been an honest dealer with the American public, an idea that is absolutely ridiculous given the malarkey about “Putin’s price hike” that is endlessly repeated by the nation’s 46th president who denies that his policies are responsible for the destruction of household budgets and the decline in living standards.
Kirby, who has been getting more face time at daily press briefings as it becomes increasingly obvious that White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is in way over her head, defended his boss during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday” where, during his conversation with anchor Mike Emanuel, he scoffed at Bezos’ suggestion that Biden wasn’t a straight shooter on inflation.
Asked for his response to Bezos’ tweet, Kirby said that it was “neither” misdirection or lack of understanding of how markets function, “not in terms of President Biden’s view.”
“The American people are facing pain at the pump, clearly, now we’re what at five dollars a gallon and the president is working very, very hard across many fronts Mike, to try to bring that price down,” he said.
“At the G7, working on trying to develop a price cap on Russian oil, asking Congress to support a three-month holiday for the gas tax and of course, releasing now a million barrels of oil out of the strategic reserve,” Kirby said, “a record number barrels of oil out of our strategic reserve to try to bring that price down. He knows that’s not going to solve all of the problems but it’ll help. If everybody cooperates on this, we can bring the price down at least by about a dollar a gallon,” a number that some have disputed.
“So, he’s working very, very hard to do this,” Kirby continued, “because he knows the impact that high gas prices have on the American household.”
Emanuel circled back to Bezos’ tweet, “Misdirection’s a pretty serious allegation from a business mogul who happens to be the owner of The Washington Post.”
“I think that anybody that knows President Biden knows he’s plainspoken,” Kirby responded, “and he tells you exactly what he’s thinking and in terms that everybody can understand, so I think we obviously take great exception at the idea that this is somehow misdirection. The president is speaking honestly with the American people about what he’s trying to do to bring the prices down.”
Biden’s spinmeister also repeated a recurring theme, that Americans need to shut up and suck it up when it comes to U.S. involvement in Ukraine and gas prices.
“But he was honest even before the invasion, Mike,” Kirby insisted, “about the fact that it would not be cost-free, certainly not cost-free to President Putin but it wouldn’t be cost-free to the American people to stand up for democracy, stand up for Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.”
Only days ago, another top White House official drew attention for saying that the economic pain being felt by Americans was necessary for the good of the “liberal world order,” not something that would seem to be compatible with what’s best for America and certainly, not an idea that was ever put forth to voters as would be expected in the “democracy” that Democrats and their media allies are constantly preaching about.

During a CNN appearance, top Biden economic aide Brian Deese let the cat out of the bag that “this is about the future of the liberal world order and we have to stand firm,” when asked about the president’s remarks at G7 that Americans would be forced to suffer for “as long as it takes” to pursue the regime’s objectives in Ukraine, something that could take years.
While Biden and his mouthpieces continue to justify the crushing burden at the pump as being at “war,” it is one that the American people did not sign up for nor was it ever declared by Congress with the only war being the administration’s war on the domestic fossil fuel industry and the relentless push for electric vehicles and green energy.
Given Biden’s history, Kirby’s claim that he is a straight shooter is about as credible as the idea that the moon is made of green cheese.
