Massive brawl over alleged cheating breaks out on Carnival Cruise, US Coast Guard escorts to shore

A few vacationers allegedly pursuing a ménage à trois made waves on a Carnival cruise ship that was returning to New York from an eight-day Caribbean excursion early Tuesday morning.

The massive brawl reportedly erupted in the ship’s nightclub at about 5 a.m.

The chaos allegedly started with a beef between just two persons over alleged cheating. It then ultimately ended up somehow involving about 60 passengers who tussled, on and off, for an hour, as the melee supposedly moved from the fifth floor, which houses the nightspot and the casino, to the first floor of the vessel, before things settled down.

As it turned out, love apparently was not in the air, nor was magic on the dance floor, in the bistro incident that occurred aboard the Carnival Magic.

According to a witness, “An alleged threesome between passengers had upset their significant others when they learned of the rendezvous,” Fox News reported.

“Beer bottles were smashed, and a woman may have been cut during the chaos,” the witness added. “She described the guests involved in the fight as ‘ignorant fools acting stupid’ and said the situation could have been worse if not for security.”

Fortunately, security quickly responded to the fracas. Officials also notified the U.S. Coast Guard who, with a small boat, escorted the ship to port in Manhattan.

The traveler with the Twitter handle @nyeem0 who recorded the cell phone video also wrote that “I was at the bar listening to my own music sipping a Shirley Temple, then the brawl broke out of nowhere!”

The NYPD was on hand when the ship docked at the pier. Authorities, however, may have to study maritime lawbooks to determine which police agency, if any, can make arrests.

“Jurisdictional questions around where the ship was at the time of the altercation — was it in international waters? New Jersey waters? New York waters? — have yet to be answered so it’s not entirely clear just yet which department or agency will lead the investigation,” NBC New York explained.

The cruise line issued a statement about the incident:

“Last night while Carnival Magic was returning to New York, a number of guests were involved in an altercation in a nightclub. Thankfully no serious injuries were reported and our onboard security team intervened. The ship arrived as scheduled this morning and shoreside law enforcement authorities were notified and met the ship to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation.”

Brawls in the transportation sector usually take place aboard commercial aircraft or at airport terminal gates. But as the old adage goes, whether on land or evidently on the high seas, nothing good ever happens after 2 a.m., especially perhaps when three’s a crowd.
