J6 committee Dem dismisses, belittles Secret Service agents who dispute star ‘witness’ testimony

The select committee on the events of January 6, 2021 was already plagued by disinterest and perceptions of illegitimacy before star witness Cassidy Hutchinson’s account on what went down in the presidential limo was rebutted by the Secret Service, blowing a smoking hole in its credibility and sending Democrats into damage control mode.

On Wednesday, Rep. Jamie Raskin who like several other committee members is a veteran of the failed impeachments of President Donald J. Trump sought to put out the fire after Hutchinson’s claims – that the ex-POTUS went berserk, lunged for the wheel of the SUV he was traveling in and attempted to strangle a member of his security detail – was reportedly denied by the two men who were actually inside the vehicle.

The Maryland Democrat appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” where he pushed back after the former Mark Meadows staffer’s claims were called into question by Secret Service, first reported by NBC chief White House correspondent Peter Alexander hours after the surprise, previously unscheduled hearing wrapped up.

Co-host Willie Geist put Raskin on the spot over the Secret Service denials that Hutchinson’s account of Trump’s actions while inside the presidential SUVwas accurate, that “both men dispute that Trump grabbed the steering wheel or assaulted an agent” and were willing to testify under oath, he asked if there were any corroborating witnesses who could confirm that the alleged incident took place.

“Well, Cassidy Hutchinson is an entirely credible witness, she testified under oath in front of the entire country, everyone was able to judge her demeanor,” Raskin responded. “She has no motivation or interest in lying in any way and so what we have on the other hand is some anonymously sourced rumors of feelings of particular agents.”

“Look, anybody who wants to testify can come forward and testify under oath about what happened,” he continued. “All we’re interested in is the truth, and you know, I sort of expected yesterday that Ms. Hutchinson as a young woman telling the truth would come under fire from anonymous sources but, you know that’s Washington for you.”

“But I will tell you that nobody is challenging the central material facts of her testimony that Donald Trump and Mark Meadows were perfectly aware that were armed people in the crowd and Donald Trump wanted to wave them in in order to swell the force of the crowd which he then aimed like a missile at the U.S. Capitol,” Raskin added, dismissing legitimate questions about the veracity of the committee’s star witness while reinforcing the narrative.

Alexander’s tweet came as Trump’s enemies were in the midst of a victory lap over Hutchinson’s performance, in what many expressed belief would finally be the silver bullet that ended the political career of the ex-POTUS after years of misses.

“A source close to the Secret Service tells me both Bobby Engel, the lead agent, and the presidential limousine/SUV driver are prepared to testify under oath that neither man was assaulted and that Mr. Trump never lunged for the steering wheel,” Alexander wrote, spoiling the party.

The problems with Hutchinson’s testimony were apparent, with even CNN’s Jake Tapper describing it as hearsay absent corroborating accounts during a Tuesday interview with Raskin.

Fortunately for Democrats, they are heading into a long holiday weekend and can regroup before the beginning of next week’s news cycle.
