In convenient timing for his upcoming reelection campaign, far-left California Gov. Gavin Newsom has struck a budget deal with the Democrat-controlled state legislature that includes handing out stimulus payments to voters in the name of “inflation relief.”
At the same time, lawmakers reportedly turned thumbs down on a suspension of the gas tax.
California reportedly has the highest gas tax in the country, clocking in at nearly 60 cents per gallon. According to the American Petroleum Institute, when state and federal taxation is factored in, it rises to about 87 cents per gallon in gas taxes.
A gallon of gas at the pump in the once Golden State currently is about $6.40.
Democrats are suspending the state sales tax on diesel, which is purportedly 23 cents a gallon, for one year, effective October 1, but KCRA reported that a gas tax “was off the table as Newsom and Democratic leaders refused, arguing it would not guarantee a big enough price drop to benefit drivers.”
For many with their eyes on the bottom line, government spending tends to increase inflationary pressure and thus makes covering the family budget even more difficult for consumers. As Fox News host Steve Hilton (among others) pointed out on Sunday evening, that has never stopped big-spending, ideologically driven Democrats.

“Californians and people across the nation are reeling from the high cost of gas and everyday goods, as supply chains shake off the pandemic doldrums and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine exacerbates problems. Critics say President Biden and Democratic allies fueled inflation with generous stimulus payments in early 2021, overheating the economy as supply struggled to keep up with demand,” the Washington Times recalled.
In a self-congratulatory press release, however, Newsom said that “Twenty-three million Californians will benefit from direct payments of up to $1,050” to help them grapple with “global” inflation.

The state plans to distribute the income-based, sliding-scale free money via direct deposit or debit card shortly before Election Day in November
“Single filers who make less than $75,000 would get $350. Joint filers with an income under $150,000 would receive $700. If they have at least one dependent, they will receive an additional $350. So for example, that means a married couple earning $100,000 per year with one child would get $1,050,” NBC Sacramento affiliate KCRA explained.
Payments drop to $250 or $200 for the higher-income brackets.
Newsom’s message also brags about implementing universal healthcare, which is going to a massive outlay, plus measures to address the so-called climate crisis through green technology and to defend reproductive rights in the aftermath of last Friday’s Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and returned abortion regulation to each state.
“In the face of growing economic uncertainty, this budget invests in California’s values while further filling the state’s budget reserves and building in triggers for future state spending to ensure budget stability for years to come,” Newsom insisted in what appears to be a very rosy scenario for a state that is losing its middle-class and higher tax base because of excessive taxes, heavy-handed regulation, crime, and lackluster services.
The ambitious, lockdown-loving Newsom, who fended off a September 2021 recall, obviously has national aspirations, whether that occurs in 2024 or in a later year.
