Liberal comic Bill Maher landed another series of blows on the left’s cancel culture lunacy, this time coming to the defense of ordinary Russians who have been punished for Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, likening it to racism.
During the “Overtime” segment of the latest edition of his popular HBO show “Real Time With Bill Maher,” the host discussed the crisis overseas with his panel of guests when the topic came up about the “lumping in” of Russians who had nothing to do with the act of aggression with Putin.
“Do you think we’re, um, lumping the Russians, I mean too much with their government?” Maher asked. “I feel like in this country what we’re doing now, everything Russian is bad and every Russian is bad, and that might have….”
“First of all, it’s not fair, if they weren’t white, I feel like we’d call that racism, you know,” he said, “to lump everybody together, not every, I mean, a lot of the Russian people don’t know what’s going on.”

Maher’s guest Kristen Soltis Anderson, a GOP pollster brought up the case of pianist Alexander Malofeev whose concerts were canceled in Canada because he’s Russian even though he has criticized Putin’s aggression.
“There is a way that this has gone way too far,” she said.
“Also strategically, it’s unwise,” added author Max Brooks, another panel member and the son of the legendary director, Mel Brooks. “Because what we were very smart about doing in World War II is, we knew the war was going to come to an end. And we knew that if we punished all Germans the way we did after World War I, we would back them into a corner. So we crafted the narrative that ‘You Germans are led astray by Hitler,’ because we knew, even if in some cases it wasn’t true, you know, we said to the average Nazi, you still got to run the post office.’
“So we have to think, we cannot back the Russians as an entire group into a corner. If we can separate Putin from the Russians in general, then we don’t only have a victory, we have a post-war plan,” Brooks added.
Maher – who is too big to be canceled – has been at the forefront of traditional liberals who are speaking out against the authoritarians who now represent the American left. He has challenged them on critical race theory, the sexualizing of young children in classrooms, on COVID restrictions, and now on Russia.
Last week, he infuriated leftists by casting a shadow of doubt on what has been the cornerstone of their anti-Trump narrative.
“If Putin thought Trump was really that supportive of him, why didn’t he invade when Trump was in office?” Maher asked.

Maher’s persistence in shedding light on the evils of cancel culture may be catching on.
The New York Times editorial board triggered leftists with an explosive Friday column stating that cancel culture is leading to the loss of “a fundamental right as citizens of a free country: the right to speak their minds and voice their opinions in public without fear of being shamed or shunned,” a possible turning point in the war on freedom of speech and association what has been waged by the modern left that hates the American way of life.
