Vladimir Putin’s state-controlled media is misleading ordinary Russians, including his father, about what’s really going on in Ukraine, according to a Ukrainian restaurateur.

That’s why it’s important for Ukrainians to respectfully reach out to their Russian relatives to tell them the truth about the invasion,  Misha Katsurin, who owns a restaurant in Kyiv, asserted.

“They are also victims. They are victims of Russian aggression; they are victims of Russian propaganda,” Katsurin said on “CNN Newsroom.”

He added that “they don’t think they are brainwashed; they think that we are brainwashed,” which is an apparent exemplar of what is occurring within many other families in eastern Europe.

The long-term effect of government propaganda and no access to free information is that the Russian people “are living in a perverted reality,” he claimed.

Many Russians still support Putin “because they don’t know the truth; they know the fake reality that Russia is ‘saving the world’ from the ‘Nazis’, and so they’re heroes to them,” Katsurin told anchor Jim Acosta.

Katsurin underscored that everyday Russians, like his father, are normal, peace-loving people and that his dad is a “super-religious guy.”

He previously had one or more Instagram posts that went viral in which he apparently lamented that owing to disinformation, his father, who lives in a rural area with no internet access, won’t accept that the Russian Federation is bombing his country.

In one post, Katsurin reportedly wrote, according to a translation, that “Goebbels would appreciate that my own father doesn’t believe me.” Joseph Goebbels was the despicable propaganda minister in Germany’s World War II-era genocidal dictatorship.

In a phone call with his dad, the elder Katsurin insisted that the Russian operation “is peaceful and they’re trying to kick out the ‘Nazi’ government from your country…and he also told me that the most impressive thing for me [was] that Russian soldiers…are giving warm clothes and food to locals and to Ukrainian military, so they are quite kind people in the eyes of my father…I tried to explain to him that it’s not true, and I’m in Kyiv, and I see thing with my own eyes…but he didn’t believe me.”

In this context, Katsurin underscored the importance of Ukrainians calling their relatives in Russia (which are estimated to number about 11 million) to offset the pervasive propaganda and spread the word.  He has created a website with this goal in mind.

Without a hint of irony, Acosta chimed in to say that “this is what happens when the government controls the news, when the government controls the media.”

According to Acosta, Russian media is prohibited from describing the conflict as a war or invasion and instead must use the descriptor special military operation.
