As gas prices continue to rise, leading to astronomical pain at the pump, many are questioning why this is happening, and especially, who is to blame.
One such voice has been Brian Kilmeade of Fox News, who on Friday publicly asked the oil industry to explain how exactly it isn’t engaging in price gouging to take advantage of the current crisis.
Fox News Channel’s ‘Fox & Friends’ covered White House press briefing in which Press Secretary Jen Psaki tangled with Peter Doocy (Fox’s representative at the White House press corps), which saw Psaki point out that the price of gas has gone up by 57 cents “since [Russian President Vladimir] Putin lined up troops on the border of Ukraine.”
Doocy had been contesting this, noting that prices had been increasing since before Putin’s unprovoked invasion of his neighbor. He questioned Psaki, saying “last month the statement didn’t mention the Putin price hike it mentioned inflation because of the pandemic. Why is that?”
Psaki stuck to her guns, explaining how complicated the global economy was:
“Global economists have all agreed that has been the biggest contributor to date of inflation because of the impact on the supply chain. Obviously, global events impact the economy. The global economy, as well as global inflation. And the price hikes as a result, that have escalated over the course of time of president Putin’s further invasion of the impasse on the global oil markets are, of course, having an impact.”
After the video, Kilmeade took a moment to mock Psaki, before discussing another clip of Psaki, saying that “[Psaki] says ‘it’s time for the oil and gas companies to start drilling on the 9,000 leases they have permits for,’ the oil companies don’t have permits for they have leases for.”
Kilmeade then noted that she may have a point in that the oil industry may not be completely open with their pricing:
“I think it’s up to the oil companies, who have been scared to death to come public because they don’t want things to have more retribution their way; it’s incumbent on them to stand up and let everybody know. You know your industry inside and out.”
“I don’t have a problem with you earning a profit. Number one, if you are not gouging, let everyone know you are not gouging. Number two is, tell us in very fundamental terms because we are not in the business what you are doing with those permits and those leases. And tell them the relation of potentially what you could be doing if the government would unleash it,” Kilmeade added.
Kilmeade wrapped up his monologue by saying “everybody would cover it the networks would carry it, and this would be the push back on everything that the spokesperson and President Biden are saying.”
The statements come as a surprising break with Fox News’ usual treatment of the oil industry, with Kilmeade being willing to point out that while the Biden administration is certainly scapegoating, the record profits being enjoyed by big oil may nevertheless warrant increased scrutiny, since either narrative still involves the American people as the net loser.
