NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Childress has vowed to donate one million rounds of ammunition to Ukraine in response to that country’s fight against the ongoing Russian invasion.
He also deemed the ongoing hostilities in eastern Europe an important reminder for America insofar as gun rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution are concerned.
Childress, 76, a former National Rifle Association board member, said that he was inspired to help the war-torn country when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy turned down an offer from the U.S. to evacuate. “The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride,” Zelenskyy reportedly said late last month.
“I was listening the other day and heard President Zelenskyy say he didn’t want out, he needed ammunition,” the car racing icon told “Fox & Friends’ co-host Brian Kilmeade on Wednesday morning.
“I called my good friend Fred Wagenhals, who is the Chairman of Ammo, Inc., which is a publicly-traded company…and I said, ‘Fred, we gotta help these people. They need ammunition.’ And he stepped right up, he said, ‘We will do it,’ and now we’re turning our production to this as our number one priority.”
Childress currently is a member of Ammo’s board.
Referencing a soundbite played in the segment, Kilmeade seemed to scoff at Vice President Kamala Harris suggesting that the Russian military may be intentionally targeting civilians in Ukraine.
“I’ll tell you, Brian: This is a wake-up call for America,” Childress responded, “and why we have to have our Second Amendment. We have…82-million gun owners in America, and to see the people in Ukraine fighting — it’s terrible to see the lives that are being lost over there. We have to do all we can, and I felt that with Ammo Inc. and myself, we were doing the right thing. And we’re gonna get that ammunition as quick as we can to them.”
Childress added that he is interfacing with government agencies in this initiative, but “to get it there quickly, we’re gonna work through a private company.”
“The number-one ammo that they’re needing right now over there is the 7.62s, and that’s what we’re gonna be producing.”
Kilmeade then asked U.S. Marine vet and Fox News contributor Joey Jones, who was participating in the discussion, “what must it be like not to have ammo while taking on the Russians?”
Jones noted that there are apparently more Ukrainians willing to fight than there are available guns and ammunition.
“I think that says a lot about the Ukrainian people, and it shows you efforts like what Richard is doing, that’s the American spirit…Richard started his racing empire with a $20 race car. And now he’s able to own an ammo company or be an owner in ammo company that’s gonna help a democracy fight tyranny. That’s what the American spirit is all about.”
Jones also highlighted the irony of President Joe Biden criticizing gun manufacturers during the State of the Union address.
“This is a firearms, this is an ammunition manufacturer, who is going to aid the United States government and some of our special operators that are going over there. And Americans need to understand, listen, it’s not just nuclear weapons that stops people from trying to invade our country. We’ve got cartels on the southern border and crime on every street. And Americans need to be armed, and they need to know how to protect themselves. And Richard is one of the people that help make that happen,” Jones asserted.
In addition to owning Richard Childress Racing, the entrepreneur and NASCAR luminary whose estimated net worth is about $250 million also owns a North Carolina winery. Visitors to the winery are apparently making donations to the ammo push.
“Stand tall and fight because that is what we would do in America if we were being overtaken,” Childress told KHOU-11.
