The possibility that China could act decisively to invade Taiwan while his administration is distracted by the Ukraine-Russia crisis has spurred President Joe Biden to dispatch a delegation to the island as a show of U.S. support.
Those who made the trip to the island nation are former U.S. government officials including retired U.S. Navy admiral Mike Mullen who served as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under both Barack Obama and George W. Bush as well as Michele Flournoy who was the undersecretary of defense for Obama.
Also included in the delegation is Meghan O’Sullivan who served as a deputy national security advisor during the Bush administration as well as Mike Green and Evan Medeiros, who are former NSC senior directors to Asia, according to Reuters which reports that the trip is intended to “demonstrate our continued robust support for Taiwan,” citing an unnamed “senior official of his administration” as a source.
The trip comes at a time of increasing possibility that the hostilities in Ukraine could rapidly escalate into a larger conflict drawing in NATO member countries as well as the U.S. Although Biden has expressed his hesitancy to put American boots on the ground in the volatile region that could change with much of the nation clamoring for a confrontation with Russia and President Vladimir Putin making a desperate move to put his nuclear forces on high alert.
Sending the delegation to Taiwan is a sign that there is concern that China could take advantage of a conflagration in eastern Europe to seize Taiwan which it maintains is its territory and, last week, remarks by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying that “Taiwan is not Ukraine” and that “Taiwan has always been an inalienable part of China. This is an indisputable legal and historical fact,” did little to dispel worries that America could be sucked into a two-front war against the pair of global superpowers.

President Ing-wen also announced that Taiwan would be sending supplies to Ukraine as a show of support to the cause.

Predictably, China did not take the news well.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin blasted Biden’s outreach to Taiwan.
“The will of the Chinese people to defend our country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is immovable. Whoever the United States sends to show support for Taiwan is bound to fail,” he said, Reuters reported.

According to Reuters, “Taiwan will join moves to block some Russian banks from the SWIFT international payments system and has sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine to show support for the international “democratic camp”, the government said on Tuesday.”
In just over a year, Biden has not only wrecked the nation domestically with his disastrous policies but his surrender of Afghanistan is now having grave ramifications on the global stage with the world inching closer to war with America’s adversaries emboldened as never before.
