First-term Congresswoman Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) has vowed that she will win reelection this year despite ex-President Donald Trump endorsing a primary challenger.
Rep. Mace, whom Trump has described as “an absolutely terrible candidate,” told Columbia, S.C.-based The State, “I’m gonna win without him.”
However, one day after the ex-POTUS endorsed Katie Arrington, Mace traveled to New York City to do a short selfie video right outside of Trump Tower to try to reinforce her MAGA bona fides.
“In the immediate aftermath of the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, Mace became one of Trump’s most vocal and prolific critics within the Republican Party,” The State added.
“Mace became the subject of Trump’s ire after she blamed him for the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. In one interview, Mace said Trump ‘put all of our lives at risk'”, The Hill recalled.

Mace also voted with Democrats to hold Steve Bannon in contempt of Congress when he defied a J6 committee subpoena.
Earlier this month, the former president endorsed ex-U.S. Department of Defense official Katie Arrington, who narrowly lost to Democrat Joe Cunningham in the usually solidly red Charleston-area congressional district in 2018 after a serious car crash took her off the campaign trail. Mace defeated Cunningham in a similarly close contest in 2020.
Arrington, who was suspended by the DOD in 2021 in what she characterized as a politically influenced decision, resigned from her Pentagon cybersecurity job earlier this month after the position was eliminated and then announced her candidacy.
Arrington had defeated incumbent anti-Trump Republican Mark Sanford (‘Mr. Argentina’ as Trump nicknamed him) in the 2018 GOP primary.
In his endorsement shared on social media by the Save America PAC, Donald Trump didn’t mince words:
“Katie Arrington is running against an absolutely terrible candidate, Congresswoman Nancy Mace, whose remarks and attitude have been devastating for her community, and not at all representative of the Republican Party to which she has been very disloyal. Katie Arrington, on the other hand, is liked and respected and a true Republican.”
“Her automobile accident a number of years ago was devastating, and made it very difficult for her to campaign after having won the primary against another terrible candidate, ‘Mr. Argentina.’ Katie is strong on the Military, our great Vets, Law Enforcement, the Border, and will fight very hard for our under-siege Second Amendment and Lower Taxes. Katie is a wonderful woman and has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”

Trump also reportedly plans to host at least one rally for Arrington in South Carolina. The GOP primary is scheduled for June 14, 2022.
Upon receiving Trump’s backing, Arrington told the Washington Examiner that “I am so humbled and honored. I am a pro-Trump, America First conservative American who was just in awe of the president looking at my campaign and saying I am the candidate. It means a great deal to me. The candidate I am running against sold out President Trump, South Carolina District 1, and she sold out the America First agenda.”
In the video alluded to above, Mace — who has received the reelection endorsement of former South Carolina Gov. and U.N. ambassador under Trump, Nikki Haley — claimed that she was one of candidate Trump’s earliest supporters and campaigned for him in multiple states during the 2016 election cycle as well as supporting him in 2020.

She also listed the many accomplishments of the Trump administration.
“If you want a Republican majority to thwart the radical, far-left D.C. Democrat agenda, then we’ve got to keep this seat in Republican hands…If you want to again lose this seat once again in the midterm election cycle to Democrats, then my opponent is more than qualified to do just that,” she added.

When The State asked about the video, Mace replied that “If you call it groveling, I would say you didn’t watch the video. I think it’s important to know what I said, but also what I didn’t say — present tense versus past tense.”
Parenthetically, Cunningham had an unusual sendoff on the House floor.
