Russia’s got jokes …

Speaking on Sky News this Sunday, Deputy Russian Ambassador to the U.N. Dmitry Polyanskiy cracked joke after joke while calling bull on the West’s claim that his country is looking to invade Ukraine yesterday, today or tomorrow.

Not til Sky News host Trevor Phillips slapped him with some biting sarcasm did Polyanskiy finally get serious.

“I think recently we’ve determined the exact date of our invasion together with my colleague diplomats here in New York. It’s the 13th of February. I think you can find this date on your calendar, if you can find it of course,” he said at the start of the interview.

Phillips responded by asking him to explain the 150,000 Russian troops lined up along the Ukrainian border.

Polyanskiy replied with another joke — this one about inflation.

“First of all, who counted them? Where do you take this figure 150,000? I remember it was 100,000, then it was 120,000, now it is 150,000, some people say 190,000. I admit inflation is very high here in New York. We see it in the prices, but in the number of soldiers …,” he said.

This time Phillips responded with some biting sarcasm.

“I think it’s inflation demonstrated by satellite pictures which we have seen. And unless Russia is now putting in cardboard tanks, there are troops there,” he said.

This appeared to slap Polyanskiy into seriousness.

Watch the back-and-forth exchange below:

“We don’t trust the U.S. and British intelligence. They let us down, the whole world, on many occasions. Enough to remember the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq,” Polyanskiy said.

He then finally answered Phillips’ question.

“But in any case, you asked about what are the troops doing there. Well, they are on our territory. They are not placed on the border immediately. They’re placed in their places where they usually are,” he said.

Phillips responded by asking him how Russia would feel if Ukraine had 50,000 troops lined up across their shared border.

Polyanskiy replied coyly, claiming without evidence that Ukraine has 120,000 troops along the border.

“We are not relaxed, and you are very close to the truth, because Ukrainians have 120,000 on the line of contact with Donbas, and they started shelling Donbas yesterday. That’s why of course we’re not relaxed,” he said.

According to the Western media, the narrative he presented is completely backwards, and the Russian separatists stationed in Donbas have been shelling the nearby town of Stanytsia Luhanska.

“Tensions in the east of Ukraine have risen dramatically after Russian-backed separatists launched an intense artillery barrage across the line of control with Ukrainian forces, shelling a nursery school and injuring three people,” The Guardian reported Thursday.

“The attack on the city of Stanytsia Luhanska blew a hole through the wall of kindergarten number 21. The school day had just begun when a shell landed on the building in Depovska Street. Video showed debris and masonry strewn over a play area.”

By Saturday, two Ukrainians had been killed and five injured, according to The Washington Post.

Diana Levenets, a Stanytsia Luhanska resident whose neighbors’ homes have been hit by some of the shells, has no doubt about where the shells were coming from.

“We have no doubt in our minds where this shelling is coming from and who is firing it. We can literally see where it’s coming from,” she told the Post, reportedly pointing in the direction of the separatists.

She also expressed great doubt about Russia’s “peace” rhetoric.

“I don’t want to believe there will be some new military action. But I don’t believe whatever Russia is saying. I don’t believe their peaceful statements or supposedly peaceful intentions,” she said.

Citing a statement from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Post noted in its report that by Saturday, the shelling in and around Stanytsia Luhanska had “increased ‘tenfold’ since Thursday.

All this comes amid a remarkable claim made Sunday by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, that “Russia has never attacked anyone in the course of all its history.”

Fact-check: FALSE.
