As Russia ratchets up the tension in Europe and continues to prepare for an invasion of Ukraine, Vice President Kamala Harris was sent off on Thursday to try to salvage the last tattered, forlorn, and probably futile hopes for peace.
Harris was dispatched by President Joe Biden yesterday, arriving for the Munich Security Conference as a show of US support for NATO allies. The White House has repeatedly warned of an imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine, citing repeated Russian attempts to provoke Ukraine into some kind of retaliation in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine.
Biden remained in the US, however, and went to Lorain, Ohio, in order to talk about using the bipartisan infrastructure bill to help with pollution in the Great Lakes, while his aides frantically tried to insist he was still paying attention to the rapidly approaching outbreak of a war that would potentially rival World War II.
The appearance of Harris on Friday is intended to demonstrate that the US is committed to the defense of its European allies, and help present a united front for NATO. Harris met with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the conference, which is held annually.
“We remain, of course, open to and desirous of diplomacy, as it relates to the dialogue and the discussions we have had with Russia, but we are also committed, if Russia takes aggressive action, to ensure there will be severe consequence in terms of the sanctions we have discussed. And we know the alliance is strong in that regard,” Harris told Stoltenberg, according to Associated Press.
However, given Harris’ credibility issues, the response in some quarters was mockery, such as from Representative Tim Burchett (R-TN), who derided the visit in an interview with Newsmax:
“I doubt [Putin’s] sitting back at the Kremlin right now shaking because Kamala Harris is over there. She couldn’t pour something out of a boot if there were instructions written on the heel. She can’t even find our southern border, much less the Ukrainian border. This is a joke, this is a travesty.”
Burchett’s comments came as yet another round of criticism for Harris over her conspicuous absence at the southern border, despite being named as Biden’s “Border Czar,” a title that appears to be increasingly meaningless given the administration’s total lack of action at the growing issues on the US’ southern border, prompting criticism even from her own party members, to say nothing of the Russian apologists looking to find reasons to run interference for Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Harris’ tweet about her trip earned her a round of criticism on Twitter as well:
I’m in Munich, Germany to lead the U.S. delegation at the Munich Security Conference. Tomorrow I will join other world leaders to underscore our commitments to our allies and partners, and demonstrate our unity in the face of Russian aggression on Ukraine’s borders.

When will you be leading the US delegation at the Laredo Security Conference to demonstrate our unity in the face of illegal immigration on the US southern border?

maybe Zelenskyy will have some good recommendations for you that you can bring back and use to defend our southern border.

If only you were this engaged with the crisis at the US southern border.

I guess it’s good that you’re concerned about a country’s sovereignty. Too bad it’s not the United States.

Whether or not Harris’ presence will do anything to deter Putin remains to be seen, but hopes for peace continue to dim as Russia struggles to find a way to provoke a conflict with Ukraine in such a way that pins the blame on the Ukrainians. War has already been effectively ongoing between the two nations since 2014, in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Crimea, as Russia is the chief supplier of men, equipment, and money for “breakaway” “rebels” in Ukraine’s eastern districts.
