While some see mask mandates as nothing more than a power play, others — particularly those in the liberal media — are clinging to them like security blankets, and it’s getting a little bit weird.
As the midterm elections approach, many Democratic-run states have suddenly changed course and are ditching their mask mandates. On Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom lifted his indoor mask mandate for much of its population, though masks in schools will still be required for another two weeks.
The move came after the entire world saw a host of celebrities brazenly snubbing the rules at the Super Bowl.
It’s not just Democratic politicians desperately trying to make nice with weary parents and workers before they head to the polls. Medical professionals are also weighing in and coming to the conclusion that the era of masks is finally coming to an end and the time for politicizing face coverings is over.
“When it comes to masking, the conversation became politicized and divisive,” Fox News contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier told Fox News Digital. “Now when the data show masking has little benefit on outcome with the highly transmissible Omicron variant and a large amount of the population has immunity, people are either disproportionally afraid to remove their mask or believe taking them off means they are acquiescing to their political opponents.”
“Regardless of reason, the masks were always meant to come off,” she continued. “While cases are low and immunity is high, the risk for most people from removing the mask is far below risks we have learned to live with every day.”
That’s science, right?
But with an almost Stockholm-y devotion, many liberal mainstream media personalities just don’t want to let it go.
Take “The View” co-host Joy Behar, for example. She never wants to give her mask up, even if CDC Director Rochelle Walensky gives her permission to do so. She’d rather forgo science for the voices in her head.
“Personally, I listen to the little voice in my head that doesn’t really follow 100% what they tell me because they keep changing it,” Behar said. “A very short time ago, they were saying put the N95 masks on, and now make sure it’s a — and now they’re saying you don’t have to wear them anymore… if I go into the theater… a crowded place, I would wear a mask, and I might do that indefinitely.”

But Behar isn’t the only mask-happy member of “The View.”
Last month, Whoopi Goldberg slammed Bill Maher after he stated, “I don’t want to live in your paranoid world anymore, your masked paranoid world.”
Goldberg responded by telling him “to stay away from everybody.”
Across the airways, it seems, the Left is eating their own over the mask debate.
After CNN’s medical analyst, Dr. Leana Wen did an about-face and suggested masks should be a matter of individual choice because “the science has changed,” MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan hit back.
Hasan played the clip on his show and brought on Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding to counter Wen’s conclusions.
“I vehemently disagree,” Feigl-Ding stated. “I’m very concerned we’re actually endangering a generation of children.”
As Feigl-Ding noted, “only about 23%” of children aged 5-11 have received the vaccination.
“Masks are the final stopgap,” Feigl-Ding insisted.
According to Media Research Center VP Dan Gainor, the obsession with masks highlights three widely-shared attitudes among members of the media: “safety-first culture, a refusal to ever admit they are wrong, and bowing to power as long as their side is in charge.”
“The first is that many modern journalists have embraced the safe space culture that dominates academia,” Gainor told Fox Digital. “The demand to be protected from any possible harm — either at work or even online. It’s a desperate desire for a bubble wrap society. That attitude is fundamental to the media support for censorship.”
“Legacy journalists also hate to ever admit they are wrong,” he continued. “It doesn’t matter if facts change, the press hates to admit it unless the new facts benefit them. Reporters and editors despise issuing corrections, even when they falsely pushed a Russian collusion narrative for about six years.”
“Lastly,” Gainor said, “masking is all about control. Journalists are no longer the young rebels. They support Big Government as long as their side controls it.”
