Ottawa, Ontario, authorities, who already have warned peaceful, anti-COVID-mandate Freedom Convoy protesters to leave the downtown area or face severe penalties, appear to be threatening to hold the dissidents’ dogs hostage and then schedule them for a fast-track adoption.
Or maybe something worse.
In a social media message, the city of Ottawa’s By-law and Regulatory Services Branch, a municipal law enforcement agency, put animal lovers who are participating in the Freedom Convoy and presumably wind up being arrested on notice:
“Attention animal owners at demonstration: If you are unable to care for your animal as a result of enforcement actions, your animal will [be]placed into protective care for 8 days, at your cost. After 8 days, if arrangements are not made, your animal will be considered relinquished.”

How a trucker subject to an “enforcement action” and with a bank account frozen by the Trudeau government can access the funds to get his or her dog out of the lockup within eight days is another matter.
“We are going to take back the entirety of the downtown core and every occupied space,” Interim Police Chief Steve Bell has vowed, the Washington Post reported. “You will be hearing and seeing these actions in the coming days.”
“Police on Wednesday handed demonstrators fliers in English and French telling them to leave or face arrest. They warned that participants who are convicted of crimes could be barred from entering the United States. They handed out leaflets to protesters again Thursday morning,” the Post added.
The news outlet also confirmed the pet “protective care” advisory.
For supporters of anti-mandate demonstrations, which includes many truckers and others who are fully COVID vaccinated, these developments suggest that authoritarian regimes have vitiated police-community relations in the context of civil liberties during the pandemic era.
Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, and various European cities are unfortunate examples.

Apart from those already hostile to the Freedom Convoy in the ends-justify-the-means cohort, Ontario’s version of coercive doggy daycare is hardly getting treated kindly on Twitter. Here is just a sample:
This is animal abuse. @peta what do you have to say about this?!

What happens after the animals are “relinquished”? You put them down?
— Chris Tomlinson (@TomlinsonCJ) February 17, 2022
First Fauci now the Ottawa police…
Why does everyone insane about Covid also want to murder puppies?
— Libertarian Party NH (@LPNH) February 17, 2022
This is bullying.
— Jacob Airey (@realJacobAirey) February 17, 2022
Now they are going after pets? What the heck is ‘relinquished?’
— LouiseB🇨🇦 (@dlbaker777) February 17, 2022
We don’t keep people in jail for 8 days for gun charges never mind a parking infraction.
— Alcona Gnome (@jpdog357) February 17, 2022
This isn’t going to end well.

If you put down a single “relinquished” pet you are going straight to the lowest circle of Hell.

Threatening Freedom Trucker’s pets!
Just when you thought the Ottawa establishment couldn’t sink even lower!
— Jimmy Mitchell (@vanjimbo) February 17, 2022
Cops and their ilk love that word “relinquished”. They use it because “seized”, “taken”, “impounded” invoke rules they don’t want to obey, and “stolen” is such an ugly word.

What objective and transparent standards will you use to determine if an animal is being cared for or not? Do you even care how traumatic it is for the pets to be taken from their owners? You’re the bad guys and you know it.
— PhilosophiCat (@Philosophi_Cat) February 17, 2022
Not sure if this is a desperate scare tactic or if you are deliberately provoking at this point, because the only possible result of this type of thing is severe reaction. NEVER try to separate a man from his dog.

What, now our pets have no freedoms? Do they also have to wear masks and carry a QR code?
— Carol (@Carol29675737) February 17, 2022
Ah, threatening the kids didn’t work so now they’re targeting the doggos.
