Florida Governor Ron DeSantis continues to take the fight to authoritarian school board leftists and their forced masking of children, a battle that is also playing out on a national level as parents seek to defend their right to make personal health decisions on behalf of their kids.
The Sunshine State Republican is despised by Democrats, their teachers’ union shock troops, and a dishonest and corrupt media which sees him as a major threat to their power, particularly when it comes to his successful management of the COVID pandemic during which he refused to sacrifice the civil liberties of his state’s citizens along with Florida’s economy in the manner that his blue state counterparts have.
Now, DeSantis is upping the ante on behalf of parental rights by expressing his support for the idea that they should have the right to sue school districts for any negative effects that their children have suffered as a result of forced masking.
During a Friday news conference, the governor went on record opposing legislation that would strip roughly $200 million in funding from a dozen school districts that defied his administration on mask mandates but favored allowing parents to instead file lawsuits.

“There’s been discussion in the legislature about penalizing financially school districts who flouted Florida law that said you cannot force mask school kids over the parents’ objection,” DeSantis said. “That was something that we believed strongly should rely on the parent and should not be forced on kids, you had a number of school districts who were basically flouting this, it was in litigation we won all that then we had the legislature come in and finally put the kibosh on all of that and so they want to do that.”
He continued, “And my view on that is rather than take money that may penalize a teacher or student because of the actions of some union-controlled school board members, my view would be — let’s not do that, but what you could do is say, any parent whose kid was illegally forced masked this year in Florida, in any of those districts, they should have the right to sue if their kids have any negative effects of it.”
“If they have speech problems, if they have emotional problems, physical problems, they flouted the law and they should be liable for the consequences of their actions and so if the legislature goes down that route,” he added. “I think that would be very beneficial, it would strike a good balance between you know, penalizing the politicians who flouted the law but also not doing that in a way that’s ham-handed and may deprive some innocent school kid of the ability to participate in a certain program.”
DeSantis who is up for re-election and is widely expected to make mincemeat of either Florida Agriculture Secretary Nikki Fried or former governor and party-jumper Charlie Crist has been the gold standard when it comes to leaders who have pushed back against the left’s extremist agenda and he will likely be rewarded by voters, especially parents, come November.
