The approval of a statue honoring Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas that could soon be erected in the Georgia State Capitol has infuriated some black Democrats whose party loyalty prevents them from acknowledging the accomplishments of a conservative African-American who rose to the pinnacle of his profession.
Last week, the state’s Republican-controlled Senate voted along party lines to approve the tribute to Justice Thomas, a man who was born and raised near Savannah before going on to serve for over three decades on the nation’s highest court where he remains as a bulwark against the worst excesses of liberalism.
Senate Bill 326 passed by a count of 32 to 21 on Monday and now heads to the state’s House of Representatives which is also controlled by the GOP where it is expected to easily pass much to the dismay of Democrats who hissed in disapproval as they lashed out at honoring Thomas.
Georgia Sen. Nikki Merritt, who is black, accused Thomas of betraying his race.
“It is not that we have a problem that he is a conservative or a Republican,” she said. “We think he’s a hypocrite and a traitor. It seems like white America keeps wanting to promote Justice Thomas, but we see more evidence where time and time again he subverts the struggles of black Americans.”
Others dissented because of his policies and rulings. But the GOP authored bill passed along party lines.

Rep. Donna McLeod, another black Democrat lawmaker told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “I’d rather them keep a Confederate monument than a statue of Clarence Thomas,”
“That’s how much I don’t like the idea,” she said.
Democrat state Sen. Nan Orrock expressed opposition to erecting the statue now instead of after Thomas passes away.“You put a statue up to him, you don’t want to be pulling it down later if things go badly, if the person goes astray,” she said, according to Associated Press.
Republican Sen. Ben Watson poked holes in Orrock’s argument by pointing out that another famous Georgian, Jimmy Carter had a statue erected while still living.
“I didn’t agree with everything that President Carter did. He is a great Georgian and a president we should be proud of,” he said. “I would hope that you would feel the same way about Justice Thomas. He is a wonderful person.”
Catcalls also rang out from the Twitter peanut gallery.

Georgia’s Repub Senate voted to erect a monument to Georgia native Clarence Thomas after heated debate and objections from several Black senators, one of whom called Thomas a “hypocrite and a traitor.”

GA wants to build a statue in honor of Clarence Thomas. The most corrupt and perverted Justice ever elected to the Supreme Court. In his tenure he voted in favor of Citizen's United breaking a tie and just now voted for the RepubiCQN led voter redistricting against blacks 5-4!

Thomas, who was nominated by President George H.W. Bush in 1991, survived a vicious Democrat smear campaign that sought to deny him a place on the bench to become only the second African-American to be confirmed to the high court, it is worth noting that a senator named Joe Biden was one of those who led the way in the failed attempt to impugn his character with sordid sexual allegations.
Justice Thomas is currently the longest-serving member of the Supreme Court, an accomplishment that black Democrats seem loathe to acknowledge.
