To the consternation of Florida Democrats and the corporate media, Dr. Joseph Ladapo is unwilling to reveal whether he has received the COVID-19 vaccination.

GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis tapped Ladapo to be Florida’s surgeon general, i.e., the state’s top doctor, which requires approval from the legislature to make it official.

During a long round of questioning in an Ethics and Elections Committee hearing in Tallahassee, Democrat state senators, among other things, wanted to know if he had gotten the jab.

“Ladapo would not disclose if he has been vaccinated, saying that is private medical information. He also said that ‘with the vaccines, as time goes by, the protection from infection declines” but “unfortunately, there’s been little discussion about this,'” the Associated Press reported. “The surgeon general has previously said the vaccines provide high effectiveness for the prevention of hospitalization and death.”

He also said that “I personally believe that people can make their decisions for themselves with information and I think that in some ways they probably make decisions that they’re more comfortable with if elements like coercion or misrepresentation of data or hiding of data are not part of the process.”

Ladapo received both a medical degree and a Ph.D. from Harvard University, credentials that gatekeeping liberals typically cherish. He immigrated to the U.S. from Nigeria with his family at age five.

The physician and Gov. DeSantis are obviously no fans of lockdowns, vaccine mandates, or mask mandates, however, which are deal-breakers for the authoritarian left but are policy positions that have encouraged Americans to relocate to Florida in droves.

Apart from informed consent and medical privacy, the my body, my choice philosophy apparently no longer applies in the COVID era. Nor apparently does the left’s traditional skepticism of corporate America such as entities that include the pharmaceutical industry.

He and the governor have backed monoclonal anti-body treatments and other therapeutics, and Ladapo has also underscored the importance of an active lifestyle and nutrition as components for a healthy immune system.

This drama is playing out even as quite a few blue-state governors are dropping mask mandates.

In a party-line vote, Ladapo’s nomination cleared the committee, setting the stage for a confirmation vote in the full state senate next week.

Ladapo is predictably being denounced by the vaccine-or-nothing hawks on social media. But he also enjoys support from many others. Here is just a sample:
